Short from Jamie Overton and Harry Manenti swats it into the leg side.

Phil Salt leaps in the air, like a long jumper, down on the boundary behind square to try to prevent the boundary. He gets a hand on it but is unable to prevent the maximum.

An attempted punch through the off side, a back of a length and a scramble seam, which is what Jofra Archer bowls when he wants it to stand up. It flies through to Jamie Overton at first slip and England have got two in the first over.

Barely had time to say JJ Smuts has never actually been to Italy...

The South Africa-born all-rounder plays an expansive drive on the up to the final ball of Jofra Archer's and edges it.

Jamie Overton, England's sole slip, takes the catch.

A good catch by Harry Brook running back and it was not easy going up and over Brook's right shoulder like that. Anthony Mosca was anticipating what Jofra Archer was trying to do. It was too quick, too bouncy and too good.

Anthony Mosca perishes for a first-ball duck, though.

A bit of reckless start to his innings from the Italy opener who goes for a filthy hack down the ground to a slightly shorter one from Jofra Archer.

Harry Brook does well to take a catch over his shoulder at deep mid-on.

Well said Ryan at 11:04! As a fanbase, we do have a tendency to be quite superlative and polarising in our views depending on how we are performing in the present moment. So many factors at play here, squad freshness, preparation, form, selection, shot selection, potential, and the performance of other teams.

    Thanks, Adwaidh.

This is the second-highest total in T20 internationals at Eden Gardens behind Scotland's 207-4 against Italy a week ago.

Nobody has chased more than 158 to win at the ground, though. India managed that against West Indies in February 2022.

So England finish on a strong total in the end, built on some late acceleration and intent.

That’s me for a short break but you’re in the very safe hands of my colleague Timothy Abraham, who is here to take you through the second half of this match as England look to seal their place in the Super 8s.

    Over to you, Tim.

England all-rounder Wil Jacks: "I think you have to give credit tor our top order for relaying information so I knew what the pitch was like. It's the best pitch we have played on so far.

"It has minimal spin and a little bit on the slower side compared to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

"We saw how Italy batted against Nepal so we are going to have bowl well. It's brilliant having Italy in the competition but for us it's about taking care of what we do first. I am always available to bowl we'l see what Harry Brook wants to do."

It was topsy-truvy one stage. It looked as though if Italy took one more wicket then England would have been under serious pressure going into the second part of the game.

It should be an unchaseable target on the board for England against Italy, but you just never know.

Only twice has a side failed to defend a score over 200 in a T20 World Cup match, with South Africa failing to defend 229 vs England in Mumbai, 2016 and West Indies failing to defend 205 vs South Africa in Johannesburg, 2007.

  15. England post 202-7published at 20 overs

It's a dot ball to end the innings but England will be happy with the total they've got on board.

They lost wickets at regular intervals as Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton and Phil Salt all failed to capitalise on good starts.

But a quickfire half-century from Will Jacks at the death helped them cross the 200-run mark.

Will Jacks just about manages to clear the rope after getting on one knee to club Grant Stewart - the Italy fielder putting in a brave but valiant effort near the boundary.

It brings up Jacks' half-century in 21 balls and takes England past 200 with one ball left.

Good from Grant Stewart, but it is only mild respite as Jofra Archer comes to the crease, and he loves his batting.

It feels unfair at times for bowlers. As a former bowler, I feel the pain bowling at this stage in the game.

Whilst I understand the frustration with the frequent unrealised potential of our batting, I disagree with the assertions of 'arrogance'. I think people forget you have 11 batters, it's the total that matters in the end.
