Perfect cover drive - full and floaty from Grant Stewart. Jacob Bethell takes a nice stride to the ball and takes a good punch towards the ball. Beautiful shot.

  3. Eng 26-1published at 3 overs

Jacob Bethell, England's new man at the crease, gets off the mark with a stylish drive to the boundary.

Grant Stewart goes for five runs on his introduction while picking up the important wicket of Jos Buttler.

Identical to Jos Buttler's dismissal against Scotland.

The shape away that Grant Stewart can get as opposed to it coming through on the line that Buttler anticipated.

It spoons up to the mid-off fielder - it was a simple catch.

Jos Buttler's disastrous T20 World Cup continues.

The England opener looked to hit new bowler Grant Stewart down the ground but only manages a leading edge which is gobbled up by Italy captain Harry Manenti at mid-off.

The former England captain has recorded 26, 21, 3 and 3 in this tournament so far.

  7. Eng 21-0published at 2 overs

Phil Salt flicks one off the pads for his second boundary of Ali Hasan's over.

And it's proved to be an expensive over - 12 runs from it.

    Phil Salt up and running.

It didn't look like Salt timed it perfectly, but as soon it got past the 30-yard circle it was like someone had a leaf blower behind the ball blowing it. It looks a good pitch, and a quick outfield.

    Eng 15-0published at 1.2 overs

Ali Hasan comes into the attack from the other end for Italy.

Phil Salt punishes a short ball from Hasan with a big six over deep backward square - the first we've seen today.

  10. Eng 9-0published at 1 over

Five consecutive singles to wrap up JJ Smuts' first over.

The Italy bowler goes a touch short with his final delivery, but Phil Salt can’t thread it through the leg side and hits straight to the fielder near the rope.

Nice dismissive start from Phil Salt.

You want to cause panic in the opposition as early as possible as an opening pair here.

  12. Eng 4-0published at 0.1 overs

Phil Salt has made England's intentions clear straightaway.

Not a great start from JJ Smuts though, and Salt slaps him down the ground and all the way to the boundary off the very first ball.

Lovely to hear one of the great national anthems for the first time at a cricket ground. From where I am up in the Eden Gardens press box I can see more Italian flags than England.

Batting first is not something England are overly familiar with in recent T20 World Cups. Across the last three editions they've batted first only three times before today compared to 14 matches chasing.

Phil Salt and Jos Buttler will open the batting for England and they'll hope to give their side a good launch here.

Left-arm spinner JJ Smuts, a former South Africa international, have the ball in hand for Italy.

It's a delightful afternoon in Kolkata and the teams have lined up at the Eden Gardens for the national anthems.

Having playing their first two games at the T20 World Cup in Mumbai, this is the second time England will play in Kolkata.

And with a good batting surface expected today, they’ll be keen to make full use of it.

Italy played well against Nepal to win by 10 wickets, and that was a bit of a shock given how Nepal pushed England in that first game. It will be fascinating, but England should be winning this game.

When you're one of the major teams playing against a team like Italy, there are a lot of unknowns. England will have to do a lot of problem-solving on the spot today.

Tom Banton was England's hero in their crucial win against Scotland last time out - with a breakout innings of 63 not out to take his side to a five-wicket victory.

It is coming up to seven years since the England batter first caught the eye as a 19-year-old by hitting a stunning 71 from 37 balls to help Somerset chase 204 against Surrey in the T20 Blast.

He has failed to nail down a permanent spot in the England squad since but will hope to do just that now by building on that match-winning knock, this time without the pressure of a run chase.
