Once we get to the tail let Josh Tongue loose on them - he showed us in the summer how good he is at removing the tail.

It is the kind of pitch where you have just got to hit off stump. Every now and then a ball will just skid.

I look at this pitch, and it reminds me of an old Adelaide wicket.

  4. Aus 168-4published at 43 overs

Up goes Ben Stokes for an lbw shout against Usman Khawaja.

Nothing from the umpire and the England captain soon cools down - there was an inside edge on that.

That's the first lbw appeal I can remember in this session - England haven't exactly been threatening since the two wickets fell in the first over after lunch.

  5. Aus 167-4published at 42 overs

Will Jacks continues, conceding two singles from his fifth over.

He's gone for 31 runs thus far.

Australia were always going to target Jacks. It will be a big Test for him this and he needs to be able to hold an end down.

    Off the lid!

A Ben Stokes bouncer clips the helmet of Alex Carey and flies away for four leg byes.

The headwear needs replacing and the batters take the opportunity to have a drink, so we have a little break before the last ball of the over.

It's nudged by Carey into the covers for no run.

We know how this story ends! “Flat, dead wicket.” Then Starc and Cummins bowl a proper line and length and we are 150 all out.

  9. Aus 160-4published at 40 overs

Are Australia trying to hit Will Jacks out of the attack?

Usman Khawaja advances down the pitch to the spinner's first delivery and lofts it over mid-off for four.

He tries to come down again three balls later but doesn't really get hold of his shot, picking up two runs this time.

A decent hour for England. It started brilliant with those two wickets. Australia generally always find a way. Alex Carey has played lovely and Usman Khawaja is doing what Usman Khawaja does on a pitch like this, which is pretty slow.

Josh Tongue is back out there, which is good. You're always wary when you see bowlers go off.

  11. Aus 151-4published at 39 overs

Ben Stokes brings himself on to bowl for the first time in this session, as England change their bowlers at both ends after drinks.

Alex Carey faces five balls without scoring, before adding two through the covers to bring up Australia's 150.

England are properly in this here, but they need to get Khawaja out. The pitch is slowish, but it pops up when you hit the deck hard, and should get more unpredictable. Tongue on a length looks very dangerous. Come on lads!

England have been almost exclusively round the wicket to Khawaja. In recent years, he averages almost the same from that angle (32) as from over the wicket (31) - might be worth shaking things up a little.

Josh Tongue is off the field. I can see that the physio has left the dugout and gone down the tunnel.

  15. Aus 149-4published at 38 overs

Will Jacks comes on to bowl after drinks, conceding three singles from his first over.

His two overs in the morning session cost 17.

  16. drinks break

    Aus 146-4published at 37 overs

Alex Carey takes a single off Josh Tongue's first ball, then Usman Khawaja fails to score off the rest of the over.

We're halfway through the session and go to drinks - we've had 52 Australian runs from 13 overs at the cost of two wickets, with both of them coming in the first over after the interval.

This pitch looks incredibly dead - whisper it very quietly, but it looks very good for our attacking format and if we can keep them below 300 we would be a long way ahead of the game.

As a bowling unit, now you work for your mate at the other end. This is a pivotal moment in this first day. Work together and keep it tight.

  19. Aus 145-4published at 36 overs

A pair of singles at the start of Brydon Carse's over brings up the half-century partnership for Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey.

It comes from 66 balls, and these two are looking pretty comfortable out there in sunny Adelaide.
