Poor Jofra Archer handed an old, soft ball. Sometimes pace isn’t enough. England need some variety to outwit the Aussies.

Some early signs of turn for Will Jacks, who's averaged 4.2 degrees of turn - the average for day one in Australia Tests is 3.2 degrees.

Josh Inglis is on the reverse sweep again, twice, at the end of Will Jacks' over.

The first is middled square and away for four.

The next is anticipated by Harry Brook at slip and he ends up going too far as Inglis doesn't get all of it and the field is left stretching to try and cut off the ball from where he'd just moved from.

I have woken up every two hours or so to see how its going. I've now dragged myself downstairs and watching the TV. Come on boys!

If Brydon Carse catches that, it is an absolute worldie. It was a great effort, but that shows we're on it in the field. Good to see.

  6. Aus 203-5published at 53 overs

Another maiden from Jofra Archer - but is that a drop to end the over?

Well, looking at the replays, technically it is but it would have been a stunner from Brydon Carse in the covers.

Alex Carey gave it the kitchen sink, Carse dived to his left and gets his hand to the ball an inch or two above the ground but it doesn't stick.

Great effort and England would have loved a wicket to start this session.

I think Ben Stokes has had to do that for his bowler, Jofra Archer. That's a good bit of captaincy and Stokes has got three to burn.

It looked a bit high and leg side on first viewing and so it proves.

Missing the top corner of leg stump and England lose a review.

Jofra Archer raps the ball into Alex Carey's pad and convinces Ben Stokes to take the review for lbw.

Doesn't look to be much going for it but we'll see.

Josh Inglis is one of those players who likes to feel bat on ball and he also likes to hit boundaries. He won't let Will Jacks slip into any line and length.

  11. Aus 203-5published at 52 overs

Josh Inglis comes out showing real intent as he nails a reverse off Will Jacks for his first boundary.

He repeats the shot but doesn't connect quite as well with this one and has to settle for a single.

Australia have passed 200, though, and will want to get close to doubling that before they're done.

50 for Alex Careypublished at 51.1 overs

    Aus 197-5

Delicate paddle sweep from Alex Carey, he runs three and that takes him to his half-century.

The left-hander has played very nicely so far and brings up his 13th Test fifty from 75 balls.

Plenty of work left to do to try and get Australia up to a good total on this pitch, though.

  13. Aus 194-5published at 51 overs

Cheers from the Barmy Army as Joe Root takes the ball tumbling to his right in the covers... but it's a bump ball.

Maiden over from Jofra Archer to start the session.

This is where you show your worth as a bowler, be professional, get it in the good areas and don't get cut. Now is the time...

Jofra Archer is going to find it difficult to crank it up to fast pace. Just slot it into your line and length.

Can we be ruthless in the first half hour after tea? This feels like the biggest session of the Ashes so far. Come on England!

    Chris, Canterbury

Not only are the Australian batters wasting their wickets, they're also giving them away at key times: straight after lunch and then just before tea. Crucial momentum shifts in England's favour.

Ben Stokes leads England out for the start of this evening session.

It is set to be an extended one given there are still 40 overs left to bowl on day one.

They won't get through all of them, even with the extra half hour.

Jofra Archer will bowl the first over after tea...

  17. Postpublished at 04:30 GMT 17 December 2025

The evening session is very nearly upon us and that wicket of Usman Khawaja just before tea has given England a real opportunity to put Australia under pressure.

The pitch is holding up a little bit and you have got to get used to the pace of the pitch and that is where Cameron Green came undone.

That session there I would put it down as England's session.

  19. Postpublished at 04:22 GMT 17 December 2025

    Thanks, Mike.

Australia have certainly been generous hosts with the wickets they've given England so far today.

The tourists will hope they can start quickly in the evening session as well. No doubt Jofra Archer will be back for another burst after tea - he's been their best bowler by a distance today.

One more wicket and they're into the bowlers...

  20. Postpublished at 04:18 GMT 17 December 2025

    Well, England's session, you'd say.

Bit of an odd one - it was book-ended by wickets with Jofra Archer taking two in the session's opening three deliveries and Will Jacks ending Australia's 91-run fifth-wicket partnership by removing Usman Khawaja for 82 just before tea.

In between, Australia looked really rather comfortable in good conditions for batting - a benign pitch, blue skies and very little wind. 100 runs came from 26 overs between the intervals.

The home side will not be happy with how many wickets they've chucked away today - and to see if they'll fling any more in England's direction, here's Sam Drury.
