Target 435 | Aus need four wickets

Will Jacks twice drives smartly through the off side for two, the first through backward point, the next in front of square.

There is a play and miss on the drive in between as Cameron Green finds a better length, though.

Two more come through backward point before a miscued pull shot lands safely to bring Jacks a single.

For England, it's time to make a fight of it. It is crucial when you're in these positions that you can't go limply. Get stuck in.

    Huge hit from Jamie Smith!

He gets down on one and slog-sweeps Nathan Lyon high over deep mid-wicket for six.

The intent is there from the England batters this morning.

Today is a great chance for Will Jacks to prove himself to the selectors, and press his case as a regular in the squad. Can England dig in and make Australia work for the win?

I think Will Jacks is alright. It was a wobble when he set off and he turned his ankle.

Oh dear. What has happened there?

Will Jacks looks to have done himself some damage as he sets off for a run, going over on his ankle and limping the rest of the way.

He manages to get through the remainder of the over and, fingers crossed, seems to be OK.

    OK then, Jamie...

Huge swing and a miss from Smith as goes after a full, wide ball from Cameron Smith.

Odd shot given when he connects with a drive next ball, he only gets a single because there are a couple of fielders out in the deep.

What we do want to see here is some application still.

When you're 3-0 down having been in this position, you start thinking about playing for places and personal pride.

Just a single from Nathan Lyon's latest, pushed into the covers by Jamie Smith.

England need another 221 to win.

That is a poor shot. Deary me, no foot movement at all, just a waft of the bat from Will Jacks.

Okay Australia, let's just get this over and done with so I can go back to bed.

Cameron Green opens up from the other end and is driven up the up by Jamie Smith second ball.

The ball doesn't quite carry to the bowler and gets through to give Smith another three.

Will Jacks is yet to score a run this morning and nearly doesn't get a chance to change that as he wafts at a ball wide of off and sees it whistle just past the edge.

You're not going to get any short or half volleys from Nathan Lyon. You have to try put him off his line and length.

The situation is dire for England but the Barmy Army are in fine voice.

They're determined to enjoy this for as long as they can.

England are away second ball, Jamie Smith using his feet and pushing Nathan Lyon through mid-off for a three.

Nicely played as the Barmy Army belt out Jerusalem.

Nathan Lyon is going to bowl the first over of the morning with Jamie Smith on strike.

How are England going to approach this? Is it time for one last big bowl of Bazball to try and pull off a miracle?

You do never know, Joel, but sometimes you can have a pretty good idea.

Meanwhile, there has been a bit of rain around in Adelaide this morning but it doesn't look like it is going to delay the start as the umpires make their way to the middle...

Still holding on to the smallest slice of hope. England will need a good first partnership and a big score from Smith and Jacks. You never know!

You never underestimate an Australian team in Australia.

I think we saw a few cracks in that top order, one, two and three; that might be a way in.

No Hazelwood and Cummins for the first two Test matches. We felt there might be that little chink in the door where we could rush through.

    But it just hasn't happened.

For Australia, written off by some as a Dad's Army before the series, this should be a day to savour.

Pat Cummins, one of the few in the bowling attack who might reasonably be expected to be around for the next Ashes in Australia, was brilliant yesterday, taking the first three wickets.

Then it was over to Nathan Lyon, who will be 42 in four years' time, to really push the Aussies towards the finish line with three quick wickets.
