Target 435 | Aus need three wickets

Good running from Will Jacks as he clips Pat Cummins through square leg and sprints back for two.

A single gives Brydon Carse two balls to face and the second of them causes him trouble, it leaps up and it pops it into the leg side... but the ball lands safely.

Carse is off the mark and stays on strike with 146 still needed for England.

    Australia are three wickets away.

It was nice to see, and that will do Jamie Smith good moving forward.

A good confidence builder for Smith. All the talent in the world and he finally showed a bit of it in Adelaide.

It has been a good effort this morning. They have given the Barmy Army something to cheer about.

Big celebration from Mitchell Starc after ending that stand of 91 with Will Jacks.

Brydon Carse is the new batter and is beaten by a rapid delivery from Starc to end the over.

It is exactly what we knew was going to happen.

Frustrating because Jamie Smith was looking so good. He was showing all his talent and showing he can go through the passages of play.

It's like he wants to play too many shots. It is the new ball and Mitchell Starc - you have gifted him a wicket.

The fun is over. One shot too many from Jamie Smith.

Just as England might have started to let belief creep back in, Mitchell Starc strikes.

Banged in back of a length, Smith tries to flay it over the leg side but miscues it and it goes straight up.

Pat Cummins is halfway back at mid-wicket and takes a straightforward catch.

Did Smith need to play that one after boundaries the two balls previous?

Jamie Smith is on a roll!

On the pads from Mitchell Starc and Smith whips it straight square for four more.

And again! Angled across his this time and driven through extra cover for another boundary.

What impresses me about Jamie Smith: One being so young, but two is his ability to go through the gears and his ability to pick up length.

    Four more!

Jamie Smith pumps the ball back over Pat Cummins' head for four to bring up his seventh Test fifty.

A very important knock for him after a tough series to this point.

    Gorgeous shot from Jamie Smith.

Pat Cummins shares the new ball but he overpitches slightly and Smith drives smartly through the covers for four.

That ball cuts Will Jacks in half. It was a good bit of bowling coming back towards Jacks.

If England gets the new ball to 15 overs old, then you never know. The new ball has taken wickets so often in this series.

If there is a wicket in the next 10-15 minutes, you feel it is Australia's game. That bit of hope is making us all nervous.

Mitchell Starc is shown prodding his side as he walks back to his mark. Is he in bother, too?

Well, the next ball is 142kph so I think he's fine. Remember he has had two warnings for running on the pitch so he does have to watch that.

Beauty. He brings one back to beat Will Jacks on the inside edge. A reminder of the threat the big left-armer poses.

Mitchell Starc has the new cherry in hand. Here we go...

Last over before the second new ball is available and Jamie Smith wants to cash in.

The England wicketkeeper drills a cover drive to the fence then skips down and hits over mid-off next ball.

One bounce and over the rope. 10 from the over in total, England need another 168.

But this is the big moment. Australia take the second new ball.

Word from the Australia camp is that Nathan Lyon is being assessed by the medical staff and they will provide an update in due course.

Bide your time out there in the middle. With someone like Marnus Labuschagne, you are going to get that shorter one.

  19. Eng 257-6published at 79 overs

Target 435 | Aus need four wickets

Another bowling change and Marnus Labuschagne is on to bowl his part-time leg-spin - it's pretty good part-time leg-spin, to be fair, though.

But after three singles from the first five, the last is a drag down and Jamie Smith powers it through extra cover off the back foot.

    Four runs.

We may lose the series here, but this partnership has given me hope that we can nab at least one Test. We clearly have the ability to bat well and sensibly, and hopefully we will adopt that approach.
