    With Australia just four wickets from victory and England requiring another 228 runs, even the most optimistic England fan would have to admit that all hope is pretty much lost.

    There were times on day four that it felt like maybe, just maybe, a world-record chase might be on.

    But now it is time to enjoy what is almost certainly the last day that an Ashes series in Australia is alive until 2029...

    Today, in all probability, is the day.

    The day we hoped would not come. Not this time. Certainly not so soon.

    This time was supposed to be different. But then again, it always is.

    Yet here we are again. A day that seems to arrive with crushing inevitability every four years.

    Yes, today is the day, surely, that England's Ashes dreams in Australia officially come to an end.
