  1. Lunch - Eng 309-7published at 90 overs

Target 435 | Aus need three wickets

Well played, Will Jacks. He gets through the Scott Boland over without incident and he will be back after lunch.

A good session for England, they added 102 runs for the loss of just one wicket this morning.

They require another 126 for the most remarkable win. But Australia, who have lost Nathan Lyon to a hamstring injury, remain firm favourites with just three wickets needed.

I can't decide whether to go to sleep now and potentially miss the greatest English Test win ever or stay awake to watch the Aussies win the Ashes and sleep in pain.

Target 435 | Aus need three wickets

Will Jacks survives and gets a single from the penultimate ball before Brydon Carse leaves the last.

But Australia sprint through and we will have one more before lunch.

Regardless of what happens, I think England can feel much more positive about Melbourne and Sydney after the fight they’ve shown here.

Target 435 | Aus need three wickets

Three balls until lunch and Will Jacks is clinging on by his fingertips.

Pat Cummins has gone past the bat twice already in the over with the England man getting himself into a real mess, moving across his stumps and trying to whip to leg at one point.

Brydon Carse is trying to get forward and not get trapped in the crease.

Australian bowlers force you back a little bit.

  8. Eng 308-7published at 88 overs

Target 435 | Aus need three wickets

Scott Boland is on the money throughout his first over with this new ball.

    As you'd expect.

Brydon Carse defends solidly, though, and there will be time for one more over before the delayed lunch. Pat Cummins is back on to bowl it after a change of ends.

  9. Lyon out of remainder of day fivepublished at 01:52 GMT 21 December 2025

Confirmation from Australia that Nathan Lyon has suffered a hamstring injury and will play no further part in this Test.

You'd have to think his chances of playing again in the series are slim given how quickly the next two Tests come after this one.

  10. Eng 308-7published at 87 overs

Target 435 | Aus need three wickets

Mitchell Starc twice jogs through rather than going into his bowling action as he battles with the foot holes.

When he does eventually bowl another ball, just one more run comes from the over.

It looks like a bowling change at the other end with Scott Boland coming on.

Concentrate, Brydon. Stay calm. Don’t copy your team-mates and throw it away.

    Excellent shot from Brydon Carse.

Four more laced through the covers to start Mitchell Starc's latest.

The longer this goes on will Australia starts getting nervous and make a few mistakes... or is that just a British thing?

England would argue that it has worked in Test cricket just about everywhere but India and Australia, Viren, but I take your point. Knowing when to rein it in, even just for a ball or two, goes a long way.

Meanwhile, the 300 is up for the tourists as a top-edged pull shot from Will Jacks flies to the fine leg boundary.

When will England realise that this is Test cricket and not the Hundred? A few flashy shots may look great in the Hundred, but it just doesn't cut it at Test level.

    Shot!

Wide half volley from Mitchell Starc next ball and Brydon Carse drills it through the covers for four.

He drives again to end the over, not timed quite as well but it gets through the in-field and England run two. 138 needed...

Well that was quick and easy. No bat involved, straight to ball-tracking... and it is bouncing over the top of middle.

Australia lose a review. Just one left now.

Will Jacks and Jamie Smith scored 91 runs between them. With England needing another 150 runs to win this match, their lower order will have to manage a world record effort to win this Test.

Brydon Carse averages 28 in first-class matches, Jofra Archer averages 23 and Josh Tongue averages 14 - with each of them with at least one fifty-plus score in the format.

220 is most number of runs that batters at number 7-11 have scored off the bat in a fourth innings of a Test match, managed by New Zealand against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2009. New Zealand ended up all out on 397 chasing 494, lead by a 140 by Daniel Vettori.
