  1. Eng 250-6published at 78 overs

Target 435 | Aus need four wickets

With Nathan Lyon off the field injured, Travis Head comes on and finds turn straightaway.

Just a single from the over but that takes England to 250 and brings cheers for the away fans in the crowd.

The highest score for England for the seventh wicket on this ground is 135 by Geoff Miller and Bob Taylor in the 1978-79 Ashes. England won the series 5-1.

Nathan Lyon has gone off. He can't put weight on his right heel. He is walking on his tip toe of his right foot.

That doesn't look good. I think he is done.

The way Lyon walked off, I don't know if we will see him again. It doesn't bode well that.

Oh dear. Nathan Lyon looks like he's in trouble after diving to cut off a pull shot from Jamie Smith.

He saves two runs but the off-spinner immediately limps off the playing area and is not putting any pressure on his right leg as he walks off with the physio.

It looks like he might be done, for today at least.

Really nicely played by Will Jacks going deep in his crease and playing it through the off-side.

Jacks into the side for his batting and his part-time spin bowling. It relies on these two in the middle.

In this situation, I don't think the draw is really in the equation, Will.

But while it wouldn't be enough to get the Ashes back, the chance to draw the series is not nothing. Equally, a 4-0 loss is marginally better than 5-0.

Meanwhile, a Will Jacks single brings up the fifth partnership and Jamie Smith punches through extra cover to take it to 52.

To talk about England playing for a draw is ridiculous in my opinion. A draw means Australia retain, so surely if you have a slight chance to win you go for it? That’s what you’d be remembered for.

It has felt a bit like Australia are waiting for the new ball.

  10. Eng 243-6published at 75 overs

Target 435 | Aus need four wickets

Will Jacks gets the first run since the rain break with a pull shot in front of square.

Cameron Green is back to the short ball plan so we might see a few more pull in this spell before the new ball.

Will Jacks and Jamie Smith have played nicely. It's a shame they went off for rain as they need to restart again.

Two dot balls end the over, it's a third straight maiden for Nathan Lyon.

We're about to find out, Alex. The sun is shining now so I wouldn't expect them to think about playing for the draw, though.

The players out back out now with two balls left in the Nathan Lyon over started began before the rain forced them off.

Will be interesting to see how England come back out. Will they continue as they were, or will they shift towards a more aggressive chase or even a more defensive attitude to see out a draw?

They will have been off for around 35 minutes by the time play resumes so we'll wait to see what that means for session times and the like.

The rain looks like it's stopped, but fortunately Snicko is still picking up the noise of the drizzle on the tarp so they're leaving the covers out.

And as soon as I write that, we have a restart time.

Play will resume in a little over 10 minutes.

  19. Postpublished at 00:37 GMT 21 December 2025

No word yet on a restart time but given the rain wasn't all that heavy to begin with, I can't see it taking too long to mop up.
