    Essex 347 v Somerset 73-3

Essex have turned to Wiaan Mulder with the ball to try and make up for his rare failure with the bat earlier.

James Rew and Tom Abell have batting records against Notts in the County Championship, they would not expect to make a new one with Essex today, but even a mere 100-partnership from these two today could be massive in this low-scoring match.

Plus, batting for time allows their new top-order batter Will Smeed to get there and bat somewhere in their top seven, ideally tomorrow.

    Jack b Coad 17 (Yorks v Hants 251-9)

Eddie Jack has looked pretty useful with the bat for a No 10 and had just boshed Ben Coad for a racy four square on the off side.

But he has no answer to a huge inswinger from the Yorkshire seamer and loses his off-stump.

Jack provided more than his share (17 runs) of a 29-run partnership with the well-set Jake Lehmann and his dismissal will be a relief to Yorks who should be batting soon enough.

Quite a few stories (and runs) between these two. Northants continue to pile on the runs so I've turned the camera elsewhere!

Peter, Hertford (but at Kent v Northants)

Lovely snap, Peter, thank you for sending in! That is of course Kent head coach Adam Hollioake alongside Northamptonshire's Darren Lehmann.

    Northants are 357-1 at Kent.

    Notts 279 v Glamorgan 3-1

The clouds are starting to gather overhead at Trent Bridge and it's gone all a tad gloomy. Quite literally for the visitors who would have been hoping to back up that decent bowling display with the bat.

  5. wicket

    Tribe lbw b O'Neill 3 (Notts 279 v Glamorgan 3-1)

    An early breakthrough for Notts!

Fergus O'Neill slams into the pads of Asa Tribe and umpire Richard Illingworth deems it to be pitching in line and going on to hit.

Not the greatest start to this season for Tribe: 11, 19 and three.

  6. Postpublished at 16:50 BST 10 April

    Surrey 310-4 v Leics

Big over for Jamie Smith as he takes Rehan Ahmed for 14 runs from the six deliveries.

    Smith races onto 137.

Surrey will surely have 400 and a minimum of four batting points by the end of the day in their sights.

300 up for Surreypublished at 16:48 BST 10 April

    Surrey 302-4 v Leics

Surrey pass 300 and rack up their second batting point. And in some style from Jamie Smith as he smashes Rehan Ahmed for six over mid-on.

    Smith c Carson b Crocombe 53 (Sussex v Warwickshire 232-7)

A lull since tea ends with the stand on 115.

Kai Smith whips Henry Crocombe straight to Jack Carson at midwicket, he is fuming, a cheap giveaway really after hours of good work with Chris Woakes.

96 balls, six fours and one six.

Jordan Thompson, the new signing from Yorkshire, joins Chris Woakes who is 60*.

We wondered if Worcestershire could respond with the ball at Lord's. The answer is yes!

A wicket apiece for these red-ball wonders Olly Hannon-Dalby and Tom Taylor means both Middlesex openers are out with Leus du Plooy and Max Holden in survival mode at 20-2.

Much more serene at Canterbury where Luke Procter and Calvin Harrison have passed their century stand at Canterbury against Kent.

Harrison has 71 and is closing in on his skipper's 330-1 as Northants currently sit on 330-1.

    Notts 279 v Glamorgan 0-0

Give Glam their props - fantastic team spirit but lack of 3rd seamer showing again. Bowling attack is unbalanced and lacks the sustained pressure of others.

    Alwyn, Crumlin

Glamorgan will certainly feel they could have limited Notts to fewer runs than 279, who put on 176 for the last four wickets.

Is Chris (15:48) seriously suggesting that Bethel is dropped to accommodate Smith? I know we have short memories but Bethel's last test innings was that 154 in the Ashes...

    Stephen, Colchester

@Chris from Dorset, he could possibly open in place of Crawley, and then you could have Bethell or Pope at 3. You then could have Foakes who was good in Surrey's opening game in place of Smith's original position at 7. So much talent, shame you can't field more players!

    Jones c & b Bashir 44 (Lancs 270-5 v Derbys)

Very sharp take off his own bowling, Shoaib Bashir diving to his right to pluck Michael Jones's drive six inches off the turf in his follow-through.

Good effort from the spinner who now has been expensive but has two wickets.

    Lawrence b Ahmed 31 (Surrey 293-4 v Leics)

Rehan Ahmed has looked dangerous since coming into the attack for Leicestershire and he's got some reward.

It's ripping away from Dan Lawrence who tries to leather it through the off-side but it finds his bottom edge and he can only drag on.

A quickfire 31 from 36 balls for Lawrence and in comes Ben Foakes, who scored a first innings century at Warwickshire last time out.

  16. Postpublished at 16:33 BST 10 April

    Surrey 293-3 v Leics

    Now then.

Jamie Smith flashes to Ajaz Patel at backward point from Ben Green and Jake Weatherald is convinced his Leicestershire team-mate has taken a catch.

The umpires confer and decide that it's not out.

Patel's honesty perhaps swaying the decision, as he was genuinely unsure whether it was a legitimate catch or not.

    The replays are not conclusive.

    Essex 149 v Somerset 35-3

    Don Topley
    BBC Radio Essex

Having been inserted and bowled out for 149, the Essex bowlers fought hard and made an immediate impact by reducing Somerset to 16-3, before Tom Abell and James Rew saw the visitors to the safety of their away dressing Room for tea at 35-3.

Seam bowlers have dominated the day on a surface that has offered a little too much lateral movement, but it is certainly not uneven bounce.

But the quality of English seamers on show has been extremely impressive on both sides.

  18. Resumption at Chelmsfordpublished at 16:31 BST 10 April

    Essex 147 v Somerset 35-3

Big appeal first ball of the evening session.

James Rew continues with the off stump, or even further across, technique he has used for a while now.

Does he get outside the line? The umpire thinks so and that is all that matters really.

Sam Cook fancied having 3-8 after 5.1 overs, and while Michael Atherton and Rob Key have both been spotted at Hove, Cook will hope someone acting as an England selector is having even half a computer screen on events at Chelmsford.

Six for Lawrencepublished at 16:30 BST 10 April

    Surrey 292-3 v Leics

    This is HUGE!

Dan Lawrence steps across to a half-volley outside off stump and absolutely smashes Ben Green over mid-wicket for six.

Into the stands and Lawrence is on a run a ball 30*.

  20. Resumption at Hovepublished at 16:29 BST 10 April

    Sussex v Warwickshire 223-6

Fynn Hudson-Prentice takes the first over after tea, bowling his typically probing lines outside off-stump.

He has 2-25 after 14 overs.
