WICKETpublished at 18:29 BST 10 April

    Coad b Baker 0 (Yorks 37-3 v Hants 251)

A couple of short balls to the nightwatchman Ben Coad from Sonny Baker has him uncertain whether to step forward and his indecision has cost him, dabbing another rising ball down and on to his stumps.

A great start to the Yorks innings for the bowling side and they now have James Wharton out there to have a go at.

  2. Postpublished at 18:29 BST 10 April

    Notts 279 v Glamorgan 68-3

Kiran Carlson picks up a four and then another two as he rocks back to dab away through the off-side.

Carlson moves onto 23 from 56 balls. Colin Ingram has nine from 19.

    Seven overs remaining today.

  3. 50 runs

50 for Craig Overtonpublished at 18:28 BST 10 April

    Essex 147 v Somerset 178-5

What a counterattacking knock this is from the Somerset skipper for this match again.

On a pitch where no-one has looked fluent that is a 21st first-class 50 for the North Devonian, off just 32 balls too.

A four over midwicket is again followed by a huge straight six, Overton using his feet and long limbs to smash his former Sunrisers Eastern Cape teammate Simon Harmer around here.

Surrey 412-6 v Leics - close of play

5:30am wake up call to travel to The Oval to watch my beloved Surrey. On way back to North Norfolk and can’t say I hold any regrets, especially with Smith’s and Pope’s knocks. Only real regret is I won’t be back home until 10:30 tonight. Long but lovely day

    Daniel, Norfolk (soon, at least)

WICKETpublished at 18:25 BST 10 April

    Whiteman lbw b Baker 14 (Yorks 37-2 v Hants 251)

    That looks pretty plumb.

Slight call on height perhaps but Sam Whiteman is back in his crease and Sonny Baker has his man.

  6. 50 partnershippublished at 18:25 BST 10 April

    Essex 147 v Somerset 168-5

Big appeal, almost a celebrappeal cut short from Sam Cook, but that is a little high on the six foot plus Craig Overton.

Next ball of course is smashed for four by Overton who seems to have benefited from that winter off, turning down the SA20 and having those two hernia operations sorted.

50 partnership already up with he and Lewis Goldsworthy, who are both applying rather different approaches, Goldsworthy onto 27* off 73 balls whilst Overton is way past him on 40* off 29 balls.

    2.4 overs to play tonight.

  7. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:23 BST 10 April

    Surrey 412-6 v Leics

Just the two runs from Ben Green's final over and Surrey are well on top after an excellent batting performance on the first day.

A massive 166 from Jamie Smith and 103 for Ollie Pope has done most of the damage.

Four batting points in the bag for the hosts and it has been tough going in the field for Leicestershire.

  8. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 18:22 BST 10 April

    Glos v Durham 456-2

As expected, that is indeed the end of the day.

An incredible day for 21-year-old Ben McKinney, who will go to sleep 214 not out, his highest first-class score.

Captain Alex Lees also made 129 as he and McKinney shared an opening partnership of 305, making a mockery of Gloucestershire's decision to bowl first.

With David Bedingham unbeaten on 76, the prospects for day two are not great for the home side, either.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:22 BST 10 April

    Jewell b Stanley 0 (Lancs 351 v Derbys 0-1)

Wow... great end to the day from Lancs who dismiss opener Caleb Jewell, the batter dragging a wide one from Mitch Stanley on to his stumps.

  10. Postpublished at 18:20 BST 10 April

    Surrey 410-6 v Leics

Big appeal as Ben Green catches the back leg of Jordan Clark.

Probably a bit high in truth.

  11. Postpublished at 18:19 BST 10 April

    Surrey 410-6 v Leics

Into the final over of the day we go at The Oval.

Ben Green will bowl it for Leicestershire.

  12. Bad light stops play at Bristolpublished at 18:19 BST 10 April

    Glos v Durham 456-2

The light has got very gloomy in Bristol and the players have gone off.

That could be it for the day.

  13. 6 runs

Somerset pass Essex's first innings totalpublished at 18:18 BST 10 April

    Essex 147 v Somerset 154-5

Craig Overton hits Simon Harmer for four through midwicket, then two balls later for six over the sightscreen.

Brilliant use of the feet from the stand-in skipper getting his side past Essex's total already with only half their wickets gone, a great effort.

Remember he won a game at Taunton with a very similar shot off the same bowler, almost into the River Tone last summer.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:16 BST 10 April

    Higgins b Hannon-Dalby 2 (Middlesex 88-6 v Worcs 191)

The evergreen Olly Hannon-Dalby bowling Worcestershire right back into this contest as he nips one past Ryan Higgins' defences.

Middlesex have slipped from 86-4 to 88-6 with three now for Hannon-Dalby and two for Taylor.

Two experienced county operators dragging the Pears right back into this contest.

  15. Postpublished at 18:13 BST 10 April

    Essex 147 v Somerset 142-5

Craig Overton edges one just wide of the cordon, Sam Cook still providing problems with the Dukes ball.

Lewis Goldsworthy has done well to survive 65 balls, just a couple shy of James Rew's high figure in this innings.

Somerset are nearly level only five down, which is a great effort on a pitch still doing plenty

Five overs remain today if light allows.

  16. 50 runs

50 up for Glamorganpublished at 18:12 BST 10 April

    Notts 279 v Glamorgan 51-3

First milestone reached with the bat for Glamorgan as Kiran Carlson puts away Josh Tongue for four and with that, takes his side past the 50 mark.

Kent v Northants 409-1 - close of play

6am start in New York to watch my beloved Kent play. I must say that there will probably need to be an inquest after today’s game. Bowling hasn’t been our strength for a while now but surely the pitch has to be looked at if a team has made 400-1.

    Vedanth, New York, USA

    That is some serious commitment...

  18. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:11 BST 10 April

    Kent v Northants 409-1

127 for Ricardo Vasconcelos. 131 not out from captain Luke Procter. 124 not out for Calvin Harrison.

Only three batters used by Northants and they have all scored centuries.

A glorious day's cricket for them as they have racked up over 40, less so for the toiling Kent bowlers as bad light ends the days a few overs short of the 96.

    Surrey 403-6 v Leics

I love English cricket, and the County Championship more than anything. Where else do you get people demanding something (in this case runs) then shouting 'no, they're not the right type of runs!!' ??? Well done Jamie lad.

    David, Driffield

To counter Simon at 17:56 re Smith batting well in good conditions: surely some kind of innings-defining score is too much to ask of a wicket keeper batsman. Quality and consistency at 6/7 in the order should be richly rewarded.

    Samuel, Dresden, Germany

  20. wicket

LANCASHIRE ALL OUT FOR 351published at 18:09 BST 10 April

    Coughlin c & b Aitchison (Lancs 351 all out v Derbys)

Ben Aitchison takes a decent catch off his own bowling, running to his right off the wicket and falling at the death to take a catch over his right shoulder.

Paul Coughlin added a useful 29 and now Derbys will have to face a couple of overs tonight which could be uncomfortable.
