England assistant coach Tim Southee hopes it's all just a little bit of history repeating at Trent Bridge.

Four years ago, England's Bazball style was born in a remarkable run-chase against a New Zealand side including Southee. The home side won despite conceding 553 in the first innings.

This time, England lost a crucial toss and toiled while visiting openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway added 317.

But England hit back with four wickets late on the opening day to leave New Zealand 361-4.

"When you have guys who played in those games, there will probably be a few guys in the New Zealand changing room with that in the back of their mind," said Southee.

"It's always there in the memory bank, so we'll see how it unfolds."

However, England produced a late rally with the ball to give themselves hope. Can that hope turn into something of substance? We shall find out over the course of the day.

Welcome to live coverage of day two of the third and deciding Test from Trent Bridge.
