Will O'Rourke had done a good job. That's his highest first-class score.

This is good from Ben Stokes. He's making something happen, which most of the other England bowlers haven't done. Stokes is looking the most threatening.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 97 overs

    O’Rourke c Gay b Stokes 19 (NZ 393-6)

Ben Stokes grabs the bull by the horns.

Three slips and a gully in place for Will O'Rourke now, giving the Kiwi the option to play some attacking shots.

After defending and leaving five balls, O'Rourke cracks.

He is tempted to good down the ground but ends up slicing it straight up - leaving Emilio Gay with a simple catch in the ring.

  6. drinks break

New Zealand 393-5published at 96 overs

It's a hot day. Time for drinks - or a hydration break as our football colleagues call it.

If England can dismiss New Zealand this morning or just after lunch, I think England will score their runs faster than New Zealand have.

  8. NZ 393-5published at 96 overs

Sorry, Alastair, hung you out to dry there...

Gus Atkinson backs up that over from Ben Stokes with a maiden.

Jamie Smith's catching may be a bit iffy, but at least he has a good pair of ears.

Only five wicket-keepers have taken 50 or more catches since 1 July 2024, and Jamie Smith's catching percentage of 94% is second only to Muhammad Rizwan's 96%.

  11. NZ 393-5published at 95 overs

Daryl Mitchell's pad was close to his bat as he defended. He might simply not realise he has hit, which does happen at times.

Ben Stokes fizzes a delivery past the defensive prod of Will O'Rourke this time as he gets one to straighten.

Even on the replay, UltraEdge was saying he nicked it but Daryl Mitchell wasn't moving. He thought it was hitting his pad. The technology there quite clearly is saying he got the finest little touch with his bat.

Has Mitchell hit his pad there, just as the ball was passing the bat?

Daryl Mitchell is shaking his head as he trudges off.

UltraEdge shows there was a sound as it passed the bat so it must have been the thinnest of edges.

It was a delivery back of length from Stokes which drew Mitchell into playing.

Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith were calling for it instantly.

  16. England reviewpublished at 94.3 overs

Ben Stokes thinks Daryl Mitchell has nicked off while defending. There is some noise but his appeal is turned down.

    Stokes sends it up upstairs.

For me, Gus Atkinson was the best bowler yesterday.

  18. NZ 392-4published at 94 overs

You'll be pleased, Steve. Gus Atkinson into the attack.

Daryl Mitchell picks up a single leaving Will O'Rourke to fend off the remainder of the over.

O'Rouke is now up to 19 which eclipses his first-class best of 17*.

This pace bowling attack looks very samey to me. Gus Atkinson is the pick but I think England would benefit from more variety, and maybe a credible spinner.

Amazingly, the nick off Jamie Smith's gloves went straight into Joe Root's hands, it makes it look a lot worse for Root. I think Smith has lined up wrong there.
