The other thing Australia have done well here is bat well into the 90th over. The bowlers have had a good amount of rest. Rest is so important in these conditions.

Time is more important than runs for Australia...

  2. Aus 425-8published at 90 overs

Jofra Archer is in the right areas but Scott Boland is able to defend and leave. Archer strikes Boland high on the back leg with the final ball of the over, but England decline to review.

The ball-tracking technology shows it was wise, with the ball deemed to be bouncing over the stumps.

    Australia's lead now 91 runs.

I think England will come out hard.

You only have to look at the last three years of what they have done - they're not going to change.

My suggestion it would be sensible and realistic to see off Mitchell Starc.

I really need some sleep so I'm going to try and doze off, trusting that Australia won't still be batting when the alarm goes off at 7am!

Gus Atkinson starts with back-to-back maidens to Mitchell Starc and gives Jofra Archer another chance to test Scott Boland's defences.

If this England team were a movie, surely they’d be Mission Impossible as they put themselves in ridiculous situations and then, just as they seem to be finding a solution, they create a whole new mountain to climb. I nearly went with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! Any other suggestions.

It is an important partnership for Australia. What England have failed to do is take wickets together.

This is an annoying innings from Mitchell Starc. He seems to produce innings like this when he needs to.

  9. Aus 425-8published at 88 overs

Frustrating for England as Scott Boland gets a freebie on his hip from Jofra Archer to get off the mark.

Salt in the wound follows two balls later as Mitchell Starc confidently carves it through third for four then pinches the strike off the penultimate ball of the over.

Australia are playing the time game here and they're getting more overs into the England bowlers legs.

Australia 419-8 at drinkspublished at 87 overs

A maiden from Gus Atkinson to Mitchell Starc which ensures England and Jofra Archer will get a proper chance to bowl at Scott Boland.

England have picked up two of the required four wickets they need in the first hour this morning. Job half done at drinks.

Huge innings for Ollie Pope's future in the team. If he goes cheaply, surely England will look to put Jacob Bethell at three to get some experience?

  14. Aus 419-8published at 86 overs

The traditional cricketing virtues of line, length and patience from Jofra Archer serving England well here.

Mitchell Starc is beaten a couple of times before he drives on the up to pick up a single to keep the strike, leaving Scott Boland one ball to defend.

With it being so hot are those cracks going to come into play? Will they open up?

  16. Aus 418-8published at 85 overs

Solid stuff from Gus Atkinson, as he concedes just a single off the over.

A bit of pressure being built by the England attack as Mitchell Starc attempts to hog the strike at the Gabba.

Gus Atkinson's first wicket down under and he's deserved that one. Great effort lad, two more to go! It's the hope that kills you?

  18. Aus 417-8published at 84.2 overs

Mitchell Starc a little leaden-footed in the crease - like he's wearing diving boots - as he defends to Gus Atkinson and he edges it but the ball does not carry.

Next ball, it's a wild swing from the Aussie batter but he does not connect.

Something feels like it's about to happen. Either a big hit, or a wicket.

England need to stop putting pressure on themselves. The next innings regardless of Australia's score here will dictate the outcome of the series. Bat properly and score 400+ and win the Test. Take the momentum into the 3rd Test and build on that.

England want to give Mitchell Starc a single and get Scott Boland down the other end.

England will feel they can knock Boland over pretty quickly.
