Hate to say it, but this has the mark of England being bowled out for 150 today. Facing the new ball under lights will be virtually impossible. Had to bowl out Australia this morning, but Starc has played for time perfectly.

George, sat across the desk, has just asked me if I think Australia will still be batting at the end of the second session.

What do you think? Thumbs up for Australia batting, thumbs down for England batting (be it via two wickets or a fun declaration).

The wheels have not only fallen off, but they have rolled down the road never to be seen again.

It’s just plain sad that nothing ever changes, that’s the worst part. All of these AUS tours. This will be over in 30 overs when we get into bat. Another 5-0.

    Losing all hope, Brisbane

One of my friends (most definitely NOT a cricket fan) messaged me earlier in the match to say she was trying to follow along but that it was making about as much sense to her as the shipping forecast.

  7. Day one & two highlightspublished at 06:27 GMT 6 December 2025

Did you miss any of the action from days one and two? Never fear - we've got you covered!

Day one is lovely viewing - a maiden Test century in Australia for Joe Root!

Day two... is less enjoyable from an England perspective.

This is something that England would never have thought of doing. They’d probably have a similar lead if the roles were reversed this morning, but England would have hit five boundaries and then out - time is more crucial.

The partnership between Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland has been frustrating. Starc has been cleverly farming the strike.

It is a good wicket, it doesn't offer much, but Australia are in such a good position to bat as long as possible and then throw England in when the sun starts to go down.

However, Carey did stick around long enough to reach his half-century off 52 balls and shared a handy 33-run eighth-wicket stand with Mitchell Starc. Carey, remember, was dropped on 0 and 25 on day two.

Starc remains not out on 46 (95) and will be eyeing a 12th Test half-century.

Wow, I ran out of optimism quite quickly, didn't I?

England did strike twice in the opening session.

Ben Stokes had Michael Neser caught behind for 16 (41) in the 76th over while Gus Atkinson got rid of Alex Carey for 63 (69) - his first wicket of the series.

So from an overnight lead of 44, Australia are now 116 ahead...

Ok, erm optimism, let's look at some wickets, shall we?

Doubtless there will be plenty of Aussies crowing in the ears of England fans at the Gabba.

Brad Haddin certainly looks smug on the telly.

Here's the eternally optimistic and ever upbeat Elizabeth Botcherby to raise all of our spirits through the break and into the next session.

Australia will be loving this. The longer they can bat and the closer they can get to the twilight period with the pink ball.

  16. Australia 447-8 at the intervalpublished at 99 overs

Mitchell Starc sees off five dots from Brydon Carse then expansively drives down the ground for three.

That's lunch, or tea, depending on your view.

Either way, 40 minutes of respite for England's beleaguered bowlers after a session of real toil in the heat.

Starc is unbeaten on 46 while Scott Boland has seven runs to his name and Australia lead by 116 runs in Brisbane.

With that over, Mitchell Starc had a couple of play and misses. Having the option of a spinner offers something different.

  18. What's happened so far?published at 06:00 GMT 6 December 2025

Just waking up or just getting in? Well, here’s a reminder of what’s happened so far on day three…

Australia were 378-6 overnight with Alex Carey on 46 and Michael Neser on 15, and a lead of 44.

While the hosts lost Neser early on, Ben Stokes having him caught behind in the 76th over, they’re still batting on and have extended their lead into three figures.

Carey, who was dropped on 0 and 25 on day four, made a half-century before being removed by Gus Atkinson for 63 (69) while Mitchell Starc is proving a thorn in England’s side with some useful lower-order runs.

Starc is unbeaten on 43 (90) while Scott Boland has 7 (27). Australia lead by 113 runs.

  19. Aus 447-8published at 98 overs

Mitchell Starc attempts to cut Will Jacks but does not make contact bringing a flicker of interest from England's fielders.

A blunder from Ollie Pope in the field at short leg allows Starc to pinch a single off the penultimate ball of the over to keep the strike.

  20. Aus 446-8published at 97 overs

England's spinning all-rounder Will Jacks is thrown the ball five minutes before the interval. Can he break this partnership?
