  1. Aus 417-8published at 84 overs

Woosh, a beauty from Jofra Archer.

He gets the ball to straighten from the round wicket to Mitchell Starc and it beats the outside edge of the left-hander.

Scott Boland the new batter and he survives the final delivery of the over.

That flew through to Jamie Smith quickly so there is a little bit of pace out there!

Gus Atkinson's first wicket of the series!

    Carey c Smith b Atkinson 63 (Aus 416-8)

Gus Atkinson does not celebrate so there's a brief moment of uncertainty as to whether he actually has dismissed Alex Carey.

It's slightly wider from Atkinson from round the wicket and the left-handed Carey flashes at it on the up and gets a feather on it.

Jamie Smith does well to anticipate the catch behind the stumps.

  5. Aus 416-7published at 82.5 overs

    Lead by 82 runs

The Gabba and its patrons grinding you down, Stephan?

Gus Atkinson looks useful round the wicket to Mitchell Starc.

The England seamer sees some extra bounce and carry with his fourth ball of the over which brings an almighty waft from Starc but he does not connect.

What do we think? Half an hour to save the Ashes?

  7. Aus 412-7published at 82 overs

Jofra Archer strays on to the legs of Mitchell Starc with his final ball of the over and the Aussie left-hander glances it fine for four. Meat and drink for a lefty.

As this game ticks on every run is important.

Australia are edging closer to that 100-run lead which everyone seems to think is a very good.

  9. Aus 407-7published at 81.1 overs

    Jofra Archer replaces Ben Stokes.

Alex Carey surprised a touch by a short ball which rears up from Archer.

It's only 80mph according to the speed gun but Carey attempts to sway out of the way but cannot get his hands away quickly enough and the ball clips his bat.

Unfortunately for England it drops safe in front.

If the first innings lead is over 150 the game is as good as lost. If we can keep it under 100 we still have a faint chance, but England don't deserve to win this game.

  11. Aus 407-7published at 81 overs

Encouraging start for Gus Atkinson as Alex Carey edges his first delivery with the new ball, albeit it falls short of Zak Crawley at gully.

Later in the over Atkinson twice beats the outside edge of the left-handed Mitchell Starc's bat.

Ben Stokes has been spot on with his line in the four overs so far today. 21 (88%) of his 24 deliveries have been in the channel or in line with the stumps, keeping it very tight.

    Another fast-scoring landmark for Australia.

Their 400 has come in 78 overs and two balls. That's the second fastest 400 score in Ashes history.

Only England at Old Trafford in 2023 have been quicker when they reached 402-4 in 72.4 overs.

  14. new ball

England take new ballpublished at 04:34 GMT 6 December 2025

Ben Stokes has taken the new ball at the first time of asking.

Gus Atkinson has it in hand.

What did we decide on calling it yesterday given it cannot be called a new cherry? A new pink lady?

We have seen this movie before, haven't we?

The one little nugget of hope I have got is that we have been following this team for some years, and they have managed to do some pretty amazing things.

Ben Stokes still looks the best. He looks the most likely, the England skipper. He just makes something happen.

  16. Aus 405-7published at 80 overs

    Get well soon, Dominic.

Ben Stokes has really hit some useful lengths this morning. Australia manage to work him into the gaps to pick up four runs off the over.

Here's how Stokes dismissed Michael Neser a little earlier.

Awake after a full hip replacement and I cannot get comfy. We need to bat sensibly today, no rash strokes, anything less than a 300 target for the Aussies in final innings and we can forget the Ashes for another two years. Time to stand up and deliver.

It is short and wide from Brydon Carse and it is a poor ball...

Sometimes it is not your day, but if you do the basics and some guy is playing wonderfully, then that's fair enough.

Whatever happens I think we will be seeing Josh Tongue at Adelaide. It is almost like England are bowling Brydon Carse to get to the new ball.

  19. Aus 401-7published at 79 overs

    Lead by 67 runs

Short and wide from Brydon Carse and Mitchell Starc uses his leavers to good effect, thrashing Carse through the covers for four.

Back-to-back boundaries for Starc who slaps the England seamer through roughly the same place but in the air.

Carse, gold necklace glistening in the sunshine as he bounds in, is back on the money in the remainder of the over.
