The last time England's first dismissal of a Test was run out was Hobart 2022, when Rory Burns was run out in the second over of their innings.

  2. Eng 52-1published at 9 overs

Jacob Bethell deftly opens the face and uses the pace from Matthew Henry to get off the mark with a casual guide through the vacant third region.

Henry responds with a peach which nips away and beats the outside edge of Bethell's defensive stroke.

Testing little period for England given Emilio Gay has yet to settle and Bethell is new to the crease.

That’s the problem with a new opening pair! Never a run there to Nathan Smith, or even a lesser fielder. Now Duckett is gone having looked fluid. So irritating! Sorry!

    Che, West Bridgeford

This is so England. Start well then doing something stupid.

    Ben, Surrey

Awful run out. No dive. Didn't even run his bat in.

    Ben, Horwich

That's the pressure of Test cricket. Emilio Gay hadn't scored since lunch and was desperate to get his scoreboard ticking. There just wasn't a single there, it was a poor call.

Duckett run out (Smith) 36 (Eng 45-1)

    Barbecued!

Emilio Gay pokes Kyle Jamieson in to the off side and calls Ben Duckett for a single.

But Nathan Smith fields cleanly and his throw zips to the striker's end.

A direct hit and Duckett is trudging back to the pavilion.

There was never a single there. Gay put his head into his hands.

Emilio Gay's got to be careful, he's getting turned round.

  8. Eng 45-0published at 7.2 overs

While Ben Duckett is playing nicely, it's not been plain sailing for Emilio Gay who is drawn into playing at an awkward delivery from Kyle Jamieson which falls just short of the slip cordon.

Was there bat on that? No, just a healthy chunk of thigh.

Duckett is looking in a rich vein of form at the moment. His feet are moving well and he's playing decisively.

  10. Eng 45-0published at 7 overs

Matt Henry makes a mess of a short-pitched delivery and Ben Duckett punishes him with a dismissive slap through mid-wicket.

Later in the over, Henry drifts on to Duckett's pads and he glances it through mid-wicket for four.

Duckett has 36 off 25 balls.

First five overs of this innings New Zealand have been able to find 1.6 degrees of swing, and 0.57 degrees of seam - both of them are lower than England.

England were also bowling around half a metre fuller than New Zealand at this stage of their bowling innings.

  12. Eng 37-0published at 6 overs

A tentative prod from Emilio Gay to the final ball of the over from Kyle Jamieson. Gay then rehearses the leave straight after.

He knows he should have left that well alone.

I like that a lot. That was full commitment from Duckett. It's a great shot.

  14. Eng 33-0published at 5.4 overs

Not quite timed by Ben Duckett, who unfurls a drive to Kyle Jamieson which plops over mid-off

Much more conviction from Duckett off the fourth ball of the over, though, after he thumps a powerful drive through the covers for four.

Crisp striking from the England opener.

It's getting a bit muggy, there are clouds gathering behind the pavilion.

  16. Eng 25-0published at 5 overs

    Matthew Henry continues after lunch.

Emilio Gay takes a evasive action to a couple of bumpers from Henry before the Kiwi seamer arrows one past the outside edge of the opener's bat.

    Close. A maiden over.

Kyle Jamieson is a real threat. He's looking the most likely at the minute for New Zealand.

  18. Eng 25-0published at 4 overs

Kyle Jamieson is round the wicket to the left-handed Ben Duckett and the England opener guides it on the up through gully and point for four.

Not an entirely risk-free shot by Duckett but England's first boundary of the afternoon from the third ball.

    Anyway, back to this match.

Emilio Gay and Ben Duckett back out in the middle.

Kyle Jamieson has the ball in hand.

    Breaking

Well, that happened quicker than anticipated...

Ben Stokes will be in Durham's squad to play Northamptonshire in their County Championship match starting on Friday.

The 35-year-old all-rounder has played two matches in the Championship for Durham so far this season.

The last of those was against Kent at Beckenham in mid-May.
