That's a really hard fought and very entertaining hundred. Phillips has led New Zealand's charge this morning, well played indeed.

    NZ 391-8

There's Glenn Phillips' first Test century!

He takes into the covers off Jofra Archer's second ball, then adds a single in the same area to move to three figures.

His fifth international century in all formats comes off 133 balls.

  3. NZ 388-8published at 95 overs

Glenn Phillips is made to wait for his hundred, with Matt Henry facing all six balls from Matthew Henry.

It's a maiden, the first of the day, although two leg byes are taken by Henry off the final ball.

Ah, and with Phillips set to face for his century, the man who peppered him with short balls last night is finally coming into the attack.

    It's Jofra Archer time.

We're taking nothing away from the way Phillips has played. It's been brave but England have given him a leg up. They've let him play his natural game and he's responded.

  5. NZ 386-8published at 94 overs

Well, that's a way to get off the mark.

After facing eight balls without scoring, Matt Henry unfurls a lovely cut to send Jacob Bethell's first ball through third for four.

The spinner's final ball offers a fair bit of width and Glenn Phillips dispatches it through the covers to move to 97.

Even by England's standards it's been an extraordinary first hour.

  7. NZ 377-8published at 93 overs

    Is that off the bat?

The runs have been given to Glenn Phillips, moving him into the 90s, but I think Matthew Fisher's delivery might have simply clipped the batter's helmet before flying over James Rew for four.

The last time an England spinner took more wickets than Jacob Bethell's three in the first innings of an Oval Test was Derek Underwood in 1969.

  9. NZ 373-8published at 92 overs

Jacob Bethell for another - Glenn Phillips takes a leg side single off the spinner's first ball and Matt Henry plays out the rest of the over without scoring.

    Jofra Archer's still limbering up

  11. NZ 372-8published at 91 overs

Glenn Phillips faces all of Matthew Fisher's over, hammering a pull for four.

One more single off the pads takes Phillips to 88 - that's his highest Test score, and sees him retain the strike.

Marion the GOAT doing good work at 12:08. If you fancy talking about England winning the football World Cup, we're all ears.

    Tom, Oxford

Was at the ground yesterday. This is a good wicket for batting, made more difficult by the morning rain. That New Zealand are scoring should not be a surprise. This match is yet to show its true face.

    Matt, London

It’s crying out for Rehan Ahmed to be picked as a spinning all rounder to put some balance into the team.

    Andy, Northampton

  13. NZ 367-8published at 90 overs

Matt Henry comes to the crease for New Zealand.

He doesn't score off the remaining three balls of Jacob Bethell's over.

Jamieson's played a good hand for New Zealand. Interesting to see if he comes out and bowls because those hits to the helmet were quite brutal.

    Jacob Bethell's golden arm!

Marion from Norfolk has the knowledge, with England's part-time spinner taking a wicket three balls after the drinks break.

A big attempted hoick from Kyle Jameson into the leg side and he's cleaned up - a partnership of 87 comes to an end.

Wicket coming, can anyone else feel it?

    Marion, Norfolk

What I find astonishing is that with six bowlers in the team, none of them are good enough to prevent a big partnership for the EIGHTH wicket!

    Jonathan, Doncaster

This is exactly why Joe Root was removed from the captaincy - naive tactics to put it mildly.

Jofra Archer bowled an eight over spell last night and I thought at the time, it's a lot of overs to be bowling on day one when you haven't played a lot of cricket.

We haven't seen him bowl in the first hour. England's most potent weapon is yet to bowl a ball on day two. He's out there so I've no idea why Jofra's not bowled this morning.

It's put New Zealand in a strong position.

It's been a little bit of chaos out there. Yesterday was a calm day for English cricket and now it's gone back to chaos.
