This is the first time Jamie Overton has taken the new ball in an ODI, while the last time Sam Curran did it in an ODI was back in 2023.

  2. SL 37-0published at 7 overs

Better from Jamie Overton for the remainder of the over as he keeps Kamil Mishara quiet.

    Just two more from it.

  3. 6 runs

    SL 35-0published at 6.2 overs

Kamil Mishara goes big and gets his reward!

Jamie Overton, continuing from the other end, goes short of a length and the Sri Lanka batter punishes him with a maximum over square leg.

Liam Dawson is another of the aged thirty-plus players who I still believe can do a very good job for England.

  5. SL 29-0published at 6 overs

Liam Dawson comes into the attack as England opt for spin early.

The left-arm spinner settles straight into a tidy length and concedes only three runs from his first over.

Whatever reasons there may be - and there often are plenty offered - England playing in front of so many empty seats. Still plenty of England supporters in early good voice.

  7. SL 26-0published at 5 overs

A very tidy comeback from Jamie Overton in that over.

He comes around the wicket and has his first delivery straighten just past the outside edge of Kamil Mishara.

Overton concedes just a single from the over but that doesn't stop England captain Harry Brook from turning to his spinners early here.

England have five spin options today. The most spin they have bowled in one ODI innings is 36 overs against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1985. Number two is 28.4 overs v Australia in Sydney in 2018.

I think a bit of spin will come very early here. Nothing much for Jamie Overton and Sam Curran.

  10. SL 25-0published at 4 overs

Sam Curran's third delivery is overpitched and Kamil Mishara takes full advantage.

He leans into the drive and the ball races through the covers to the rope - a confident start from the two Sri Lanka batters so far.

  11. Why are England wearing black armbands?published at 09:17 GMT 22 January

The England team are wearing black armbands today in memory of former spinner Norman Gifford, who sadly passed away earlier this week, and former ECB chief executive David Collier, who passed away earlier this month.

It’s such a quick turn around which for all it maybe the way things are these days, it still leaves me concerned that despite different conditions and personnel the Ashes will hang heavily.

  13. SL 20-0published at 3 overs

More runs for Sri Lanka but not from the bat this time.

Pathum Nissanka glances Jamie Overton's third delivery off the pad and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler can’t gather despite a valiant attempt. The ball trickles away very fine all the way to the boundary.

In the last 10 ODIs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka have won seven, tied one, and lost just one (with one no result). This run includes victories over Zimbabwe, India, Australia, and Bangladesh.

England, on the other hand, have lost each of their last seven ODIs at this venue, with their last win coming here in 2007 (Alastair Cook was player of the match on that occasion).

Sam Curran is only 27 and his supporters really feel that he can play a big part going forward again.

And with things going so badly in Australia, he has an opportunity in 2026 to show he’s learned from the past and can come again.

  16. SL 12-0published at 2 overs

Sam Curran attacks from the other end for England.

He begins with a lovely delivery but then is punished by Pathum Nissanka who rocks onto his back foot and sends him to the boundary through cover.

Just a single more from the rest of the over though.

I was disappointed that Jamie Overton decided to go white-ball only last summer but I think he’s a top player and will still play some important games for England.

  18. SL 7-0published at 1 over

Pathum Nissanka opens his account immediately, pulling Jamie Overton's first delivery towards deep mid-wicket.

Kamil Mishara is also off the mark from the final ball of the over, but not in as convincing fashion.

With the pitch offering little bounce for Overton, the Sri Lanka batter feathers a bottom edge that skims away to the boundary through the slips!

Before play, a group of parachutists (parachuters?) landed the T20 World Cup on to the outfield. Stephen Harmison and David Gower are in traditional Sri Lankan dress. We’re expecting in to be dry – England have five spin options, even after Will Jacks went down ill.

Pathum Nissanka faces the first ball with his opening partner Kamil Mishara watching on from the non-striker's end.

England's Jamie Overton has the ball in his hand.
