We haven't mentioned Dhananjaya de Silva since he came in after the fall of Kamil Mishara.

But he announces himself with a well-timed shot off Adil Rashid, hitting it right past the bowler for his first boundary.

Rehan Ahmed has come on so much after a really good year with promoted Leicestershire.

Batting and bowling really exciting. Now England need to play him whenever possible and make sure he doesn’t get ahead of himself.

His Leicestershire coach Alfonso Thomas said Rehan started to enjoy his cricket again. Something which only gets you so far but things falling into place for Rehan Ahmed.

  3. SL 65-2published at 15 overs

England want Rehan Ahmed to pile the pressure on Sri Lanka from the other end.

But after a good start to the over, the leg-spinner is punished for his wide line with back-to-back boundaries by Kusal Mendis.

Let’s brighten up the past mistakes of the previous two months and put some pride back into wearing an England shirt, we know you can do it, show us!

Looking forward to what should be a far too strong England team getting back on track. 50 overs about the right amount of time for an England innings judging by the winter so far!

Mishara wasn't able to pick up on that googly. He moved outside the line of that delivery. Poor shot.

    Bowled him!

Sri Lanka lose both openers as Kamil Mishara goes for the sweep but misses the googly from Adil Rashid completely and pays the price in the form of his wicket.

Rashid has his first wicket of the day and England are firmly on top here now.

Spin from both ends now as Rehan Ahmed joins fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Only two runs from the over.

  8. SL 51-1published at 12 overs

Adil Rashid comes into the attack now and he keeps things tight in his first over.

England will want to build on that breakthrough and will hope Rashid can turn the screws.

  9. SL 50-1published at 11 overs

A wicket and just one run from Sam Curran's over.

Kusal Mendis is the new Sri Lanka batter and he begins by defending the first three deliveries he has faced.

That's what happens to a batter when he's in defensive mode. He fails to hit the ball because he's just been sat in his crease. There's no power and no elevation

Door is open Sam Curran’s variation coming off. Nissanka and Mishara were starting to look a bit anxious and Nissanka first to fall.

    England have the breakthrough!

I was just about to say the Sri Lanka openers have given the hosts a very good platform but Pathum Nissanka completely mistimes a slog and it ends up in the hands of Liam Dawson at mid-on.

Sam Curran draws first blood for England.

People say it’s such a quick turnaround for the players but if you compare it to the 02/03 Ashes, the players stayed on in Oz to play about 15 ODIs then went straight to a 50 over World Cup. It was no different back then!

That first 10 overs was ok from England but just enough balls too wide or short and with nothing much happening it suits Sri Lanka more.

  15. SL 49-0published at 10 overs

Warning signs for Liam Dawson as Kamil Mishara looks to go big off his third delivery but can't get hold of the shot well.

But Pathum Nissanka makes no mistake two balls later as he capitalises on the width on offer and finds the boundary through point.

One criticism of the England Test team is a lack of leaders. Despite the poor form of the ODI side, there instantly looks like more senior players in this team.

Jos Buttler is a former England captain, Sam Curran has done a lot of franchise captaining, Liam Dawson is a veteran. Adil Rashid is a more quiet character, but still has bags of experience. In all the Harry Brook chat yesterday, he also mentioned that Jacob Bethell is now effectively the white-ball vice-captain.

We will have to wait for Adil Rashid as it's Sam Curran who returns to the attack replacing Jamie Overton and switching ends for this spell.

Just four runs from the over but it could have been more as Pathum Nissanka mistimes a pull towards deep mid-wicket, running just two.

Time for Adil Rashid now for me. Spin at both ends.

  19. SL 39-0published at 8 overs

Another steady over from Liam Dawson.

The spinner keeps things tight from his end but without really troubling the Sri Lanka batters.

It looks a very good pitch, a touch slow perhaps, but spin will play a big part and both teams are packed with spinners.
