I want more of that! Give Alex Carey one, and then bring the field back up.

The Adelaide Oval is abuzz as Travis Head moves to 99 with two from the first ball of the Joe Root over.

The field comes in, though, and the opener plays out five dot balls to stay one short of a ton for now.

Great battle between Root and Head there.

It has been a topsy-turvy day. There was hope, then there wasn't. Now Australia are on the charge and they're so in front.

After 49 overs, it looks like we might finally see Ben Stokes turn his arm over soon.

The England captain has been warming up during the drinks break but he's off the field as play resumes so Joe Root will continue.

There are still two days left, Matt, so it depends when England do find themselves batting again.

That approach might be what is required in trying to chase down whatever target they're set.

For now, Australia are going along nicely and a single for Travis Head brings up the fifty partnership with Alex Carey.

Much to the displeasure of the Adelaide crowd, who are desperate to see Head get to his century, drinks are taken.

Once we get back out batting, surely the message has to be bat sensibly and bat long. Draw is the best outcome. Just try to avoid the whitewash!

    Lead by 282

Travis Head, four shy of a hundred, crunches a short ball from Joe Root into the covers.

He can't beat Ben Stokes in the ring, though, and he stays four away from another ton.

One of my frustrations with the starting 11 is the lack of a spinner.

The lack of a decent spinner. We need to be taking wickets. And there's still no sign of Ben Stokes.

    Beauty from Jofra Archer.

He gets one to nip back as he bowls from round the wicket to Alex Carey.

It whistles behind bat and pad but just past leg stump and Jamie Smith dives to his right to take it.

    Maiden over.

It is all looking a bit bleak, isn't it? I can't see England chasing more than 320.

You feel once Travis Head gets his hundred. He is going to have some fun. I hope so because it will be entertaining to watch.

The partnership between Travis Head and Alex Carey is already up to 44 in no time at all.

They milk Joe Root for five from the over as the lead gets ever closer to 300.

England have built no pressure with the ball since Perth and they're paying the price for it.

Five dot balls from Jofra Archer as he cranks it up towards 90mph again.

A single comes from the last ball of the over so Alex Carey keeps strike, leaving Travis Head waiting eight shy of a hundred.

Alex Carey is always busy looking to steal ones and twos, run the field ragged. He is the perfect guy to come in and join Travis Head as England are searching for just another couple of wickets.

Five singles from Joe Root's over but a slice of luck for Travis Head.

The Australia opener aims a big shot down the ground, doesn't get hold of it at all and could so easily have picked out Brydon Carse at long-off.

Instead, the ball lands just short of the fielder and he strolls through for one.

Too straight to start from Jofra Archer and his first ball flicks off Alex Carey's thigh pad for four leg byes.

The fast bowler finds his line as the over goes on and the pace is trending in the right direction, too. Closing in on 90mph later in the over.

Some Ashes defining wickets needed here. All or nothing now boys. Let's keep the lead under 400 to give us a chance. Let's keep positive, come on England.

Double bowling change. Jofra Archer, after a well-earned break, is back into the attack.

Change of bowling and it's part-time off-spinner for part-time off-spinner as Joe Root replaces Will Jacks.

Root has dismissed Alex Carey four times in Tests so that might be part of the thinking.

Three singles from the over and Travis Head is up to 90 on his home ground.
