This is painful. England don't seem to have a clue what to do. Head and Carey look very comfortable.

His shot off Will Jacks beats Ben Duckett in the covers, crossing the ropes for the 15th time in this innings.

Will Jacks has struggled to keep a check on the scoring rate across this Test match. He's bowled 38 overs in total and conceded at 5.44 runs per over. He's conceded six or more runs in 19 overs, that's 50% of his overs in this match.

Jacks has bowled only 48% dot balls across both innings. Of the 1,325 occasions an English bowler has bowled 20 or more overs in a Test - Jack's 48% dot balls in this Test is the lowest of all.

We're approaching the end of the day, with Josh Tongue taking the penultimate over of the session as fans filter out of the ground.

HOT TAKE: The preparations, selections or tactics are not the reason we will get beaten in this series. Maybe, just maybe, Australia are just a much better team.

Oh dear...It really is the cherry on the top. What else can you ask for? Everything seems to have dropped Australia's way. Well done Alex Carey. It seems to be written in the stars.

    Aus 263-4

Will Jacks sits one up nicely for Alex Carey and the Australia wicketkeeper swivels to dispatch the ball to the md-wicket boundary, beating a sprawling fielder.

A single in a similar place then brings up Carey's half-century off 84 balls.

His third consecutive 50+ score, after 106 in the first innings here and 63 in Brisbane.

I don't think Travis Head has been massively challenged by any of the England bowlers. It has just been a cut-fest.

The whole thing about bowling is to sort of work the batsmen over and challenge technique and make them unbalanced. It has just not been like that.

No four to end this Josh Tongue over, but Alex Carey forehands him tennis-style to find three to long-off.

Without wanting to get super bleak, if Stokes has picked up an injury here, Tests four and five could be particularly bleak.

Apart from some notable exceptions - Root, Archer and Stokes. A totally shambolic performance throughout the series by England after raising such high hopes and expectations.
