From 4-13 in 2024-25 to 13-4 in 2025-26, the New England Patriots have been one of the big success stories of the NFL season.

Led by second-year quarterback and one of the frontrunners for this year's MVP, Drake Maye, the Patriots go into this one strong favourites against a Los Angeles Chargers side that lost their final two games of the regular season.

With that said, it is far from a foregone conclusion.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is one of the strongest minds in the game and with a quarterback like Justin Herbert on side, anything is possible.

Expect points galore and a raucous atmosphere in what is Foxborough's first NFL play-off game in seven years.

My last thought, what about the NFC West? Three of the four NFC teams are from the NFC West. I am not sure that has ever been done before.

We don't hear enough about how well the 49ers' defence is playing. I know these were difficult conditions but they really got it together and formed a tight unit.

How good is the NFC West? Well three of the four teams make up three of the last four standing in this side of the play-offs.

And what a couple of games we'll have next week - as the 49ers and Seahawks played in the final week of the regular season to decide who gets the top seed, and that means the rematch will take place in Seattle.

And after both the Rams and Bears earned late comeback victories they'll clash at Soldier Field when former Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford goes up against the comeback king Caleb Williams.

    • Los Angeles Rams @ Chicago Bears

As an Eagles fan I feel we messed up last week by resting players and not beating the Commanders. That would have set up a game against the out of form Packers. However even with the 49ers injuries, they deserved the win tonight, well done to them

  8. Super Bowl reign ends for Eaglespublished at 01:04 GMT 12 January

    Nick SirianniImage source, Getty Images

Nick Sirianni has taken his team to two Super Bowls, winning one, but this defeat will not go down well with the tough Philadelphia fanbase.

Especially due to the offensive whimper they went out on, with Jalen Hurts and his receivers struggling for a connection all season long - and that's what ultimately cost them.

Sirianni arguing with AJ Brown before Brown went on to have two big drops will be talked about, but in general the approach to the game - being happy to lean so heavily on defence and not open things up on offence will be talking points for the fallen champs.

  9. 'We're resilliant'published at 01:04 GMT 12 January

FT: San Francisco 49ers 23-19 Philadelphia Eagles

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson: "Everybody knew what we had at stake, everybody played their part which helped us get the dub"

"We've just got to lock in and out more points on the board and that will lead to more dubs. We're resilient. We've had a lot of injuries throughout the year but guys stepped up and made plays. That's what happened today, guys went out there and made plays."

So many key players out with injury - yet everyone has stepped up for the team. Kittle out is something we don't need post season. Seahawks next !

Lost that game by our own errors - missed PAT, unnecessary penalties, awful play calling in 3rd quarter. Again! Patullo has to go. Hurts has had a different play caller every season at Philly and this offense deserve so much better than what they’ve shown this season. Disappointing but not surprising. Hoping for a Seahawks/Bears v Bills Super Bowl.

  12. 'We just carried on'published at 01:03 GMT 12 January

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey: "God is good man. We take each day at a time and go as hard as we can each time. I love this group so much, I don't have enough good things to say about them.

"We focused on one play at a time. We knew it would be a 12 round fight. No matter what happened in the game, good or bad, we just carried on."

The Eagles have the best roster and the best GM and an elite DC but the worst OC in the NFL and a Head Coach who lets his own ego get in his way - he is so much worse than he thinks he is.

I think coaching could have the ultimate impact on the outcome of the Super Bowl this year. Usually it's the talent, but I think the coaching is what's going to do it this year.

The Eagles were simply outcoached this game.

    Greg Brady

    It was a monumental victory.

I am so impressed with San Francisco hanging in this one. They didn't get the best Brock Purdy in this one and still survived.

When you think about all the teams that have Super Bowl experience - most of this core team was in that game in Las Vegas. Outside of the Rams, there just isn't a lot of experience left in the NFL play-offs.

  20. FT: Revenge for Niners as champs beatenpublished at 00:49 GMT 12 January

San Francisco 49ers 23-19 Philadelphia Eagles

Incredible performance from San Francisco with all those injuries, missing out on the number one seed last week and having to then go on the road cross country to face the Super Bowl champions.

And yet, they were the better team throughout, from the very first drive when they came out swinging to wide receiver Jauan Jennings throwing a touchdown pass to a banged-up defensive unit playing lights out football to keep Jalen Hurts in check.

Christian McCaffrey was superb, Brock Purdy kept his cool despite two interceptions and Kyle Shanahan enhanced his claims to be Coach of the Year.

It wasn't pretty but this was some game! San Francisco advance to the Divisional Round where they will go to Seattle to face another big rival in NFC West foes the Seahawks.
