Los Angeles Chargers 3-9 New England Patriots - fourth quarter

It's slow and methodical by the Patriots but they've gone 39 yards in five play and they've held the ball for three-and-a-half minutes as they just cross over midfield as we head towards the final 10 minutes.

I think this Chargers defence is thinking 'we've got to find a way to do this ourselves'.

Typically for this game, the Charger take two steps forward and then one step back as both teams are struggling for any sort of consistency.

It's not exactly been a classic, but, hey, if you're a fan of top level defence then you'll be loving this play-off arm wrestle.

The Chargers have to punt it away for the fourth straight drive.

Just one quarter left to go on this wildcard Sunday and it will start with the Chargers nearing midfield and looking to finally get the ball into the end zone.

That's the best play we've seen from the Chargers in some time. Every once in a while in a play-off game you just catch a break and all of a sudden it wakes you up.

I don't know if they need to have a better check-down option for Justin Herbert but he has not made the plays under pressure so far here tonight.

Justin Herbert fumbles, but Kimani Vidal picks up the loose ball and then races away for a 17-yard gain. Lucky break that for the Chargers.

There are opportunities for both these offences and they've just been unable to hit on some of those big plays.

  9. field goal

Rhamondre Stevenson gets six yards on a carry but the Pats then let Maye try and throw for the first down, which he's unable to do so Andy Borregales has to come on and kick a 39-year field goal.

It's only a six-point lead but that seems a lot the way this game is going.

Los Angeles Chargers 3-6 New England Patriots - third quarter

A rare big play for the Patriots as Kayshon Boutte jumps in front of his defender to collect the pass and run away with it for a 42-yard gain and a move into Chargers territory.

  11. Sack!published at 03:11 GMT 12 January

Drake Maye gets sacked for the fourth time in the game but hs picks himself up, dusts himself down and then throws a 19-yard pss to Hunter Henry.

This game's not really been about big speed, outside plays, which are the specialty of TreVeyon Henderson.

It's been more about let's pound it down your throat, and that really fits Rhamondre Stevenson. The more he can be in this game, the more it will fit his style of play.

  13. Chargers puntpublished at 03:08 GMT 12 January

Los Angeles Chargers 3-6 New England Patriots - third quarter

A turnover from the Patriots costs them nothing in the end thanks to their defence standing tall again - it's been a proper defensive struggle this one.

After Justin Herbert fails to make the most of thing the Chargers punt the ball away and Drake Maye is back in the hot seat.

Justin Herbert has come out slinging it, and it kind of works as he draws a pass interference flag on the Pats as the Charger move towards midfield.

A bit lucky to move the chains but there's a definite attempt to try and be aggressive with Herbert now from the Chargers.

  15. Fumble! Chargers take overpublished at 03:01 GMT 12 January

Los Angeles Chargers 3-6 New England Patriots - third quarter

Oh Drake Maye! His inexperince shows here as he's put under pressure on second down but instead of throwing it away or even just taking the sack, he tries to find a way out but fumbles as he does do.

The Chargers drop on the ball and get the turnover and get out of jail as the least they've have expected was to concede three points but they've got away without any.

Show the whole resume Drake Maye. He is feeling it now.

Drake Maye leading a powerful drive here as he gets into the red zone after 10 plays and looking well placed to add some points - hopefully for him it'll be seven.

Justin Herbert is going to have to take it in his hands. There's been time to throw the ball.

This is not the avalanche of pressure he's faced all year. He's got to be willing to stand in there for a bit and find somebody down the field.

  19. Three and outpublished at 02:54 GMT 12 January

Quick drive by the Chargers as the Pats defence forces a quick three and out - not th best start to the half.
