  1. Head coach focus: Mike Vrabel chasing historypublished at 23:07 GMT 8 February

Mike Vrabel seemed the obvious choice for New England head coach last summer - he's Patriots through and through and did wonders in charge at Tennessee when almost getting to a Super Bowl.

Things have gone far better than expected in his first season at Foxborough though and he now stands a game away from becoming the first man ever to win the Super Bowl as a player and head coach with the same team.

Only one man has ever played in and been head coach in the Super Bowl for the same team, and maybe there's an omen here as Gary Kubiak never won a ring as a player but led the Broncos to victory as head coach in Super Bowl 50 - held at Levi's Stadium no less.

Vrabel's a three-time champion with the Pats as a tough linebacker and he's a tough, defensive-minded coach who likes to get stuck on, often getting involved in training with his players.

He's also been a superb game manager and in the biggest game of all that could be crucial.

  2. Head coach focus: Mike Macdonaldpublished at 23:07 GMT 8 February

Seattle Seahawks v New England Patriots (23:30 GMT)

Seahawks boss Mike Macdonald has gone largely under the radar but his two seasons in Seattle have been outstanding and come after a fine stint as defensive coordinator in Baltimore.

He's a defensive mastermind and will also be calling the plays again tonight on the sideline, that's a lot on his plate in just his second year as a head coach.

At 38 years and 227 days he can become the third-youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl tonight behind only Sean McVay (36 years, 20 days) and Mike Tomlin (36 years, 323).

He can also become the first head coach under 40 to win 17 games in one season, including the playoffs, in the entire history of the NFL.

Macdonald can join one of the most exclusive clubs tonight if he can get Seattle over the line, as he'd become just the third man ever to...

    • Be in charge of a top ranked scoring defence as a defensive coordinator
    • Be in charge of a top ranked scoring defence as a head coach
    • Win a Super Bowl as head coach

Only Hall of Famer Chuck Noll and Bill Belichick (we won't mention the Hall of Fame) have done that before.

  4. Can Maye survive sack attack?published at 23:05 GMT 8 February

    Drake MayeImage source, Getty Images

Drake Maye has been sacked 15 times in the play-offs so far, the record for one post-season is currently Joe Burrow's 19 sacks in 2021. And since the Patriots offensive line has allowed five sacks in all three games so far then that consistency could give them this unwanted record.

And apart from Denver, Seattle are the last team a struggling O-line wants to see, with a plethora of sack artists in their defensive front containing four players with at least six sacks this season.

The Patriots are also making history by starting two rookies on the offensive line in Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, and how those two hold up could have a big say in who wins the game.

  5. Who are the players to watch part 2?published at 23:03 GMT 8 February

They say not to worry about the opposition so here's who the Patriots will be relying on to get the job done this evening.

TreVeyon Henderson: The rookie running back has mostly played second fiddle to Rhamondre Stevenson but has shown he can cut loose when given his opportunity, including scoring two 50-yard+ touchdowns in the same game in week 10 against Tampa Bay. Don't give him space to run into!

Stefon Diggs: Drake Maye tends to spread the ball around but his most reliable receiver has been veteran wideout Diggs, who is making his first Super Bowl appearance. He racked up his seventh 1,000+ yard season in his first Patriots campaign.

Milton Williams: In last year's Super Bowl for Philadelphia Eagles, Williams recorded two sacks and a forced fumble in their dominant victory over the Chiefs.Snapped up on free agency last year, he has become an integral part of this Patriots defence.

We've told you about the quarterbacks but as good as they are, you don't reach a Super Bowl on the strength of one man's arm. Just ask Buffalo Bills star QB Josh Allen.

Here's a selection of players to look out for on both sides of the ball.

    Seattle:

Jaxon Smith Njigba: The NFL's leading receiver with 1,793 yards in the regular season. JSN has exploded in his third season, bagging 10 touchdowns in 17 games and another two in the play-offs.

Kenneth Walker: One half of a double-headed monster in the Seahawks backfield, Walker has been unleashed since partner-in-crime Zach Charbonnet went down in the Divisional Round. Four rushing touchdowns in the play-offs make him a major threat this evening.

Ernest Jones: Linebacker Ernest Jones is a tackle machine, racking up 126 in the regular season and a further 14 in the play-offs. He's the game-breaker on defence for Seattle.

  11. Expert view: MVP predictionspublished at 23:01 GMT 8 February

    Hugh Ferris: Sam Darnold

If Seattle win with any offence whatsoever tell me a voter who won't lean into the idea of Darnold completing one of the great comebacks the NFL has ever seen, from draft bust to Super Bowl MVP.

    Rob Staton: Sam Darnold

Vrabel will likely dip into the Bill Belichick playbook to try and take away the main offensive threat, which is Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Darnold could look to use running back Kenneth Walker in the passing game, Rashid Shaheed downfield and expect Cooper Kupp to make a few plays. Darnold also had his best game of the season against the Rams to get his team to the Super Bowl. If he doesn't turn the ball over the Seahawks have a great chance to complete a glorious season with a championship.

    Mike White Sam Darnold

I was tempted to go for Jaxon Smith-Njigba and I think he could still get it but for JSN to have a big night, law of averages suggests Darnold will have played a significant role in that happening so I'll plump for the much more standard QB pick.

    Sam DarnoldImage source, Getty Images

    Paul Higham: Milton Williams

Let's face it, it's a quarterback award isn't it, but since I'm backing a low-scoring upset win I'll go for just the 10th defender to win the MVP. Von Miller was the last, in this very same stadium, wearing all white as well! Aside from the omens, Williams did have a couple of sacks and a forced fumble and recovery on Patrick Mahomes for the Eagles last year and something similar in a tight contest could be a difference maker.

    Ben Collins: Leonard Williams

Some 17 Seattle players registered at least half a sack this season, with their interior defence particularly aggressive. Tackle Leonard Williams has registered eight sacks and 33 quarterback pressures so I'm backing the 13-year veteran to emerge from the Dark Side and become a rare defensive MVP.

  13. Quarterback head-to-headpublished at 22:59 GMT 8 February

    Super Bowl 60

Sam Darnold led the league in turnovers and had 14 interceptions alone in the regular season, but he's played clean in two play-off games so far, while Drake Maye has struggled a bit more with a few fumbles thrown in there as well.

Darnold was brilliant against the Rams and has been more flashy with his throws, but Maye has been grinding in some really tough weather and using his running ability to drag his team through.

This will be a fascinating battle tonight.

  14. QB focus: Darnold's ultimate redemptionpublished at 22:58 GMT 8 February

    Sam DarnoldImage source, Getty Images

Sam Darnold could pull off the ultimate redemption story tonight, as for most of his career he was statistically ranked as the worst quarterback in the league.

Darnold is proving though that timing is everything, and not to write off a quarterback too soon, as he produced a 14-win season in Minnesota - who then passed on keeping him and he went to Seattle.

And he's risen to another level in the Pacific Northwest by leading his side to the Super Bowl after the best performance in the biggest game of his career in the NFC title match.

He's just the eighth starting QB to make the Super Bowl in his first season with a new team, and just one win away from NFL immortality. Not bad for a huge bust eh?

  15. QB focus: Is Maye the man?published at 22:58 GMT 8 February

Drake Maye can become the youngest quarterback in history to win a Super Bowl tonight and the fifth to get a ring in his first two seasons in the league.

He had a remarkable season when breaking team records for his accuracy, which is quite something at a team led by Tom Brady for two decades, and he looks to have a similar character to the GOAT.

Maye is so young yet all-business and team first, you don't sense an ego and especially in a tough play-off run he's been happy to get the job done any way he can.

He was in this stadium watching his hometown Carolina Panthers a decade ago, now he'll hope to be on the right side of the result as history awaits.

Either way, though, you suspect the future is bright.

Seattle Seahawks v New England Patriots (23:30 GMT)

Paul Higham: Seattle have lost three games this season by a combined nine points, but somebody's got to back the Patriots haven't they? And underdogs have won four of the last five Super Bowls.

I don't think they can win a shootout but I'm not expecting one with these two defences - I'd like them to strike first though as Seattle are 11-0 this season when the score first.

Listen, a dominant Seahawks win wouldn't surprise me, but I've just got a feeling Vrabel and Josh McDaniels with all their experience can pull something out of the bag.

The Pats are 12-0 and allowing just 14.5 points a game when defensive wrecking ball Milton Williams and shutdown corner Christian Gonzalez are on the field together, and they'll both play on Sunday.

And if it's close going down the stretch then it only takes one play. Give me the Pats in a nailbiter.

The Seahawks have been the most complete team this season and when one unit struggles, such as the defence in the NFC Championship, the offence tends to pick it up (and vice versa). They've proven they can outlast the better teams, including the Rams (twice), 49ers (twice), Jaguars, Texans and others.

The Patriots are brilliantly led by Mike Vrabel, their defence grew as the season went along and in Drake Maye they have an X-factor at quarterback. If the Seahawks don't get in their own way and avoid turnovers, they might just be too strong.

We all love a good revenge game but this isn't Bill Belichick v Pete Carroll, Tom Brady v Russell Wilson or 'Beast Mode' v baffling goal-line playcalling and it's not the 2014 season anymore. What it is though is a redemption story for Sam Darnold.

Perhaps his autobiography will be 'From Ghosts to Glory' after his infamous "I'm seeing ghosts" sideline comment in 2019 meeting (against the Patriots of all teams).

Having made it this far, it will haunt him forever if they don't finish the job. That said, I think Darnold exorcises a few demons by taking home the Lombardi Trophy.
