Introduction
The following template notes are meant to be used in conjunction with the State Apart website. The notes are divided into subjects and they are targeted at either GCSE or A-Level courses. The notes are offered as lesson ideas and possible learning outcomes.
Rationale
Before attempting to devise lessons using the A State Apart website it is worthwhile reflecting on the general objectives teachers wish to achieve in the teaching of their subject.
While devising the sample templates the general objectives, outlined below, were considered to be an appropriate framework around which lessons could be constructed.
- Knowledge and Understanding
- Key Concepts
- Learning Outcomes
The subject matter for the sample lesson templates were chosen from the web site, following the main menu options presented on the screen.
It is intended that after sampling the template examples teachers could use the list of general objectives (1-3) above to generate their own lesson/activities
Template Structure & Definitions
The lesson templates were constructed under the following headings:
Topic
- Learning Outcome
- Key Concept
- Citizenship
- A State Apart Focus
- Suggested Activities
- Follow-up Work
The sample lessons were generated from the structure above using this standard template. (Note: it is recognised that the many teachers have always inherently taught elements of Citizenship and that there is obvious overlap here).
Topic
This defines the content and states it briefly.
Learning Outcome
What teachers want the students to know, understand or be able to do at the end of the time they have spent using the website.
Key Concept
This is the conceptual idea that teachers wish students to understand or learn.
Citizenship
The website offers learning opportunities in the following:
- Key Concepts (e.g. power, conflict, authority, dictatorship, and democracy, etc
),
- Values and Dispositions (e.g. to be open to change views and attitudes via discussion and evidence, etc
)
- Skills and aptitudes (e.g. use reasoned arguments, recognise propaganda, use media formats critically, etc
)
- Knowledge and Understanding (e.g. the nature of democracy, diversity, human rights, etc
)

These are classroom activities and pupil work, which could be derived from the web site resource and follow-up lessons that use the resource.
