Politics Exemplar - Lesson exemplars using A State Apart website

This example demonstrates the value of the resource in researching information on the main parties in N.Ireland. On a very basic level the site can generate excellent factual information on the key personalities and their political organisations. Teachers would aid the learning outcome with a preparatory lesson(s) on the structure of the British Government and the mechanics of Direct Rule and the Good Friday Agreement either through use of textbook material or the State Apart video or similar.

Topic Political Parties and the governance of N.Ireland
Learning Outcome To understand the primary aims and objectives and organisational structure of the main political parties in relation to the Agreement
Key Concepts Political organisations
A State Apart Focus [LINKS TO OTHER RESOURCES]
[THE AGREEMENT]
Citizenship The nature of political parties and democracy
Suggested Activities Recommended using two 30-40 minute teaching periods, a back-to-back session is ideal.

Pupils should be equipped with a clear instruction on how to access and navigate the site and have a well-defined work sheet.

The worksheet could include an opportunity for the pupils to do the following using:
· To note the main aims of each party
· To extract organisational structures
· Note main party members
· Compare and contrast their attitude to the peace process and the Agreement

Follow Up This worksheet could form the basis for a detailed class discussion and follow up exercises on the similarity and differences between the parties
