History Exemplar 1 - Lesson exemplars using A State Apart website

The site button on the Troubles could be used as an overview resource. Teachers would aid the learning outcome by preparatory lesson(s) on the 1969-98 context either through use of textbook material or the State Apart video or similar.

Topic An overview of events in N. Ireland
Learning Outcome To understand the major events and turning points in the phase of N.Ireland history known as The Troubles
Key Concepts A Turning Point in History and understanding chronology and development
A State Apart Focus [TROUBLES]
Citizenship The full range could be targeted but focusing on the pupils own 'Values and Dispositions'
Suggested Activities Recommended using two 30-40 minute teaching periods, a back-to-back session is ideal. It is important to encourage the pupils to stay on task by concentrating solely on the Troubles section

Pupils should be equipped with a clear instruction on how to access and navigate the site and a well-defined work sheet.

The worksheet should include an opportunity for the pupils:
· To note key dates on a timeline
· Add key names to a personality list or who's who
· Check technical words such as republican and UDA using and generating their own glossary of terms

Follow Up This investigation could form the basis for an introduction to a piece of coursework
