  7. Southern link road plans approved by councilpublished at 17:40 BST 20 October 2016

    Herefordshire Council has approved plans to acquire more than £1m worth of land to build Hereford's southern link road on.

    While the council will try to buy the sites, which are mainly farmland, to begin with, it could end up using compulsory purchase orders.

    The new road will run from the A49 Ross road roundabout, to the A465 and Clehonger Road. Construction work is expected to start in January 2018.

    The Beacon Primary School in Redditch will be closed tomorrow, as a temporary measure, after a wasps nest was found in the school building, Worcestershire County Council says. 

  10. Reports of violent crime in West Mercia increase by more than a thirdpublished at 17:10 BST 20 October 2016

    Reports of violent crime in West Mercia have jumped by more than a third, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics

    There's a similar picture across all of the West Midlands.

    In the twelve months up to June this year reports of violent crime to West Mercia Police rose by 36%, to 23,500. 

    There have been rises in offences involving the use of knives or firearms.

    Though it's argued that much of the increase is due to new recording procedures, statisticians say in reality there's still been an increase, with the figures mirroring studies of assault victims treated at Accident and Emergency units.

    Sanders Park in Bromsgrove has had a makeover - 100s of flowering crocus bulbs have been planted by schoolchildren to raise the profile of efforts to eradicate polio.

    Children from Dodford First School planted Ruby Giant purple crocuses, donated by the Rotary Clubs of Bromsgrove and north Worcestershire, to match the colour of the dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised.

    The number of exotic animals being bought may be increasing in Hereford and Worcestershire, but many people cannot cope with their new pets and are abandoning them.

    Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre, in Eccleshall in the West Midlands, has been handed so many unwanted pets that they now have a waiting list.

    The Environment Agency is urging homes and businesses to stop disposing of oil and fuel in an unsafe way. 

    The organisation says its officers have dealt with a number of incidents in the last few weeks where oil has polluted the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. 

    It says a two-mile (3km) stretch of the waterway has been impacted, with seven swans requiring treatment from animal rescue groups.

    Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington will be opening the Wyre Forest Leisure Centre next month. 

    The centre, in Kidderminster, has a six-lane 25m swimming pool along with fitness suites, a sports hall and climbing wall.
