There was one dance - I think our Tango - where in the middle I had the panic-stricken thought: I do not know the next step, or the one after. It was like being struck by lightening. And before I could even panic, my body had done steps 12-17. That is what dancers call 'muscle memory' and it is the greatest cure for nerves, knowing that the body has a record of the dance even if your mind has given up the ghost.

After I danced in a cowboy suit Bruno said 'that was how the west was LOST!'

People always used to think I was hurt. I was called a 'stork struck by lightening,' and after I danced in a cowboy suit Bruno said 'that was how the west was LOST!' But in truth, when you stand at the end of that table you feel so privileged to be in the contest (I did, anyway) that you take the insults along with the compliments in the way that they are intended - as part of the entertainment.

There was a moment where Len pointed at me and said: 'Genius' after my best dance and I was so overwhelmed I wanted to go round the table and hug him. But [I have] love for the others too - I always made a point of catching Craig in the bar afterwards and saying I'd enjoyed whatever he'd said.

How key is costume to Strictly success?

I felt like Fred Astaire - until I started to move, of course

Probably my favorite costume was the one I wore for the charleston, because it was absolutely classic ballroom (white tie and tails). I felt like Fred Astaire - until I started to move, of course.

I can't praise the costume (and hair/make-up) teams enough. They weren't just dressing us; they were giving us pride and confidence. It's not easy to dance in front of ten million people live, when you haven't done it before, and the costume and make-up rooms were the places you could remind yourself: it's pure fun, and you're supported.

When it came to the tango, I employed my General Election face!

My favorite bit of dancing was the facial part. I used to watch my pal Carol Kirkwood and think - "Amazing: she dances with her smile." I knew the key thing was just to show how delighted I was to be on the show and in Karen's company learning so much. When it came to the tango, I had to look like I had just got a parking ticket, so for that I employed my General Election face. I wasn't expecting it to come in so handy!
