International reggae superstars UB40 were born at the end of 1978 and would go on to release more than 50 singles in nearly 30 years, with record sales in excess of 70 million.

In 2008, singer Ali Campbell and his band mates Astro and Micky Virtue left the band, forming their own group. Campbell's brother Duncan picked up lead vocal duties in his absence. A decision on who has the right to perform under the UB40 name has not yet been reached.

Supergroup Major Lazer, which features producers Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire. Their single Lean On, which is also nominated for Song of the Year, has been listened to over 526 million times on streaming service Spotify alone.

Their new single Light It Up, featuring Nyla and Fuse ODG is likely to dominate BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra’s airwaves as Lean On, and Ellie Goulding collaboration Powerful did before it.  

Jess Glynne had already scored Number One records with Clean Bandit and Route 94 before this year, but 2015 saw her pick up her first (of two) solo chart toppers - Hold My Hand and Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself -  proving her serious songwriting credentials, and her incredible vocal range.

One notable Later debut this year came from BBC Sound of 2016 nominee Izzy Bizu, who performed Give Me Love earlier this month.
