After a huge season's best, 134.2, from Canada pair Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud, Italy's Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii delight the crowd and milk the applause at the end of their routine. Why not?

A slip from Macii might well have affected their score... but 136.61 is still enough to put them in top spot so far!

Amos Mosaner is raging with himself after that fifth end, lashing his brush against a wall in anger.

The big, bald Italian botched his final throw and team-mate Stefania Constantini - on the ice where she learned the game as a child - was only partially able to retrieve the situation.

That allowed Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds to steal one and open up a 5-3 lead.

Blimey, Canadian pair Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud just bettered their season best score by more than 11 points. For those unfamiliar with figure skating, that's a lot.

Talk about saving your best for the big occasion.

Perhaps an opportunity missed, there. Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat take one in the fourth end but it looked for a while like there might have been more out there for them.

Still, they go into the break 4-3 up and all the pressure is on the Italians, who are the ones who need to win.

There are a lot of Americans in the crowd here in Assago tonight - they know there is a real chance of their second gold of these Games.

USA pair Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea looked quite overwhelmed after performing their routine, the first of the night - in which they overcame an early blip to finish strong, including a stunning one-handed lift by O'Shea.

    A great scene-setter for tonight.

It's not gone well for Maisie Hill either.

The Team GB snowboarder also can't land her opening attempt and scores 20, putting her last of the 12 competitors who've gone so far.

Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea of the USA kick things off in the pairs element of this team event.

Skating to a soundtrack of Sweet Dreams, Eleanor Rigby and Everybody Wants to Rule the World - not a bad triple play - Kam and O'Shea put in a brilliant showing.

They're clearly delighted and are even more thrilled when a season's best score of 135.36 comes in from the judges.

An early marker from the Americans in their battle for gold with Japan.

Earlier in the week, BBC Sport spoke to Maisie Hill, and she told us an incredible full circle story about a little pizza restaurant located in the shadow of the big air here in Livigno.

“When I was 15, I was here and in that exact pizza restaurant having a complete meltdown because I thought I wasn’t very good at snowboarding.

“When I go up to the top of the big air, I can look down at that pizza restaurant and think ‘it’s ok Maisie, you made it’.

“I’m pretty proud of myself. I’ve worked so hard to get here, it’s not been easy, so I feel so blessed.”

    Here's Team GB's Mia Brookes!

The 2023 world champion hits the deck on landing, scoring 29.75 and putting her second last of the nine competitors who've gone thus far.

The 19-year-old can discard that score, but it means she has to land both her next two attempts to realistically make the final 12.

If you know Mia Brookes' story, you know about the family motorhome.

As she was growing up, her parents - Nigel and Vicky - would drive her around Europe for training and competitions, saving money on hotels and giving their budding superstar as much time on snow as possible.

On Tuesday, Nigel and Vicky arrived in Livigno in their home away from home, and when BBC Sport went to film with them earlier in the week, we turned up to find Mia chilling inside in the motorhome.

They booked this spot during Covid, to which Mia had said "I might not get to the Olympics".

"I said well you might not be going to the Olympics, but I am," said Nigel.

"We always planned to be at the Olympics, it's just a coincidence our daughter's in it."

We're back to 3-3 but Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds will consider that a result given how that third end unfolded.

The Italians had a sniff of three or four points at one stage, but some sterling defensive work limited the hosts to just one point.

29 snowboarders, including Team GB's Mia Brookes and Maisie Hill, are kicking off qualification.

Each competitor will get three attempts, with their best two counting, and 12 at the top of the standings will progress to the final tomorrow.

Tess Koady of Australia gets us going, scoring 78.50.

Georgia coach Eteri TutberidzeImage source, Getty Images

We expect one of figure skating's most controversial figures to be rinkside tonight.

Georgia coach Eteri Tutberidze is famous for her success at the Olympics - coaching the women's singles gold medallists at the last two Games - but infamous for her cold attitude and harsh methods.

She was the coach of Kamila Valieva at Beijing 2022. Valieva, then 15, was women's gold medal favourite but failed a drugs test and struggled in the singles event. Afterwards, she was berated rinkside by Tutberidze - shocking scenes which even drew condemnation from then-IOC president Thomas Bach.

Tutberidze was cleared of wrongdoing in the Valieva case, but her frosty demeanour was seen again last night as Georgia's Nika Egadze made errors in his routine.

Certainly something to keep an eye on.

Tonight, the first figure skating medals of these Games will be awarded - and it is a straight shootout between USA and Japan for gold.

In the team event, each nation puts forward a competitor in the men's, women's, pairs and ice dance disciplines. The five top teams are through to the final events tonight, where 10 points will be awarded for the best in each category, down to sixth for the lowest scorers.

USA, the reigning Olympic champions, currently lead on 44 points, five ahead of Japan. However, the Japanese scored maximum points in qualifying for the three events left tonight - pairs, women's and men's - so are still in contention.

Hosts Italy are currently third on 37 points, with Canada on 35 and Georgia on 32.
