  2. Longest and fastest - what makes downhill different?published at 09:58 GMT 8 February

    Alpine skiing - women's downhill

If you missed the men's downhill event yesterday and need a reminder of how the event works, here's a very quick summary...

Often seen as the pinnacle of alpine skiing, downhill has the longest course out of the four individual alpine disciplines, while it is also faster than super-G, giant slalom and slalom, with speeds in excess of 90mph.

Athletes get one run down the mountain and whoever sets the fastest time will win gold.

Good morning from the absolutely stunning Tofane - a place it has taken me two days to become obsessed with. I’d sleep here if I could.

This iconic 2,572m slope hosted the men’s downhill event back in 1956 and here we are 70 years later for what is sure to be an absolutely thrilling women’s downhill event.

So many storylines here but let’s just take a moment of appreciation for this glorious setting and the absolutely perfect conditions day two has provided us with. Clear blue skies, sunshine. Perfect.

  5. Vonn more time?published at 09:50 GMT 8 February

    Alpine skiing - women's downhill

The big question for today's women's downhill is whether Lindsey Vonn will be in action - and, if she is, can she grab herself a medal?

The former Olympic champion said on Tuesday that had ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but that she was still "very hopeful" about competing.

Vonn was airlifted to hospital in Switzerland just nine days ago after crashing in the final World Cup race before the Games.

"As long as there is a chance, I'll try. That's where I am," the 41-year-old American said.

Snowboard - women's parallel giant slalom

The women's qualifying and elimination round has just finished and there's no surprise that two-time defending champion Ester Ledecka has qualified for the knockouts as the fastest rider.

The Czech's two qualifying runs took a total of one minute and 30.79 seconds, which was 0.69 seconds faster than the next best snowboarder - her compatriot Zuzana Maderova.

The knockout stages will start this afternoon at the very precise time of 13:29 GMT.

    Snowboard - parallel giant slalom

It's a big day for snowboarding's parallel giant slalom, with medals to be won in both the men and women's events.

It's a head-to-head race through gates on two parallel courses (blue and red) at the same time.

In this morning's qualifying events, each rider completes a run on each course - competing only with clock.

The 16 fastest riders will then compete in head-to-head races until a winner is crowned.

As things stand, all four of those teams are outside of the semi-final qualification spots with three matches left to play.

None of their results will effect Team GB, who secured qualification on Saturday with seven wins in seven matches.

The Games may have only officially started yesterday but Team GB's Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds are well into the swing of things and have already qualified for the mixed doubles semi-final.

The British pair started their bid for an Olympic medal in curling's mixed doubles on Wednesday and they've been in action every day since, competing in the round robin.

Their impressive unbeaten record of seven wins from seven games means they qualified for the semi-final with two matches to spare.
