It's been a good first half here. Marina Zoueva sits at the top with a good time but the heavy hitters are yet to come.

So far we have not had an Individual Neutral Athlete win a medal at these Games. Might Marina Zoueva be the first?

She is from Belarus, who are currently banned from the Olympics for their political alignment with Russia.

If she wins gold, the Olympic anthem will be played, the Olympic flag will be raised and it will all be very awkward.

Here's how the medal positions look at the half-way stage:

GOLD - Marina Zoueva with a time of six minutes and 57.70 seconds.

SILVER - Marijke Groenewoud +0.63 seconds.

BRONZE - Maira Jasch +3.24 seconds.

The 'big hitters' are still to come ...

Nadezhda Morozova has got a rope around her waist to ensure that her hands stay fixed behind her back. It also means that her arms don't move about too much.

Morozova started off so promisingly but couldn't keep it up. I think Maira Jasch's experience really showed in that race.

Marina Zoueva and Laura Hall knew what they needed.

It's much easier when you know what the times are and what conditions are like, you have something to aim for.

Short track requires a certain amount of resilience, it's tough. It's so unpredictable and anything could happen at any second, they have to be prepared for disappointment.

You can see the athletes moving from left to right, it's a new technique that's been developed in the past few years. A lot of athletes have picked it up but it requires a great amount of core strength.

Zoueva, who started slower than Canada's Laura Hall, picked up her pace in the last 1000m and is the fastest of the four skaters to go so far.

Hall recorded a time of seven minutes and 02.90 seconds to put her in third.

This is a long, tough event, it looks like it really hurts.

You can see that after the race, with both skaters with their hands on their knees because it's so tough for them.

The noise for Marijke Groenewoud there was intense, and it is remarkable to look around the stands here and see that it is 90% occupied by orange-clad Dutch fans. You could easily be in Amsterdam or Rotterdam.

Unthinkingly, I wore an orange hoodie today and I'm now getting dirty looks from the Italians in the press box.

That's a statement win for Team GB.

Bruce Mouat has now beaten Niklas Edin in nine of the last 11 meetings and it leaves the Swedes - who lost their opener against Italy and face another medal contender in Canada next - in a perilous position.

Seven wins from the nine round-robin matches will guarantee a place in the semi-finals - fewer may well still be sufficient - and the Scottish quartet have started well in the race to reach that mark.

They are back on the ice on Friday, in what should be another top-tier contest against the Italians at 08:05 GMT - live on the BBC.

Before then, the GB women's rink will start their campaign against world bronze medallists China at 18:05.

Italy have never finished higher than fourth in the Winter Olympic medal table. As recently as Sochi 2014, they failed to win a single gold.

If Lollobrigida wins here and Arianna Fontana claims short track gold later, Italy will have seven golds at these Games - level with current medal table leaders Norway.

  20. Lollobrigida goes for golden doublepublished at 15:27 GMT 12 February

Francesca Lollobrigida became the first Italian woman to win Olympic speed skating gold when she won the 3000m on Saturday in an Olympic record time – on the day of her 35th birthday.

She has a chance of another here – she won her first world title over this distance at last year’s World Championships.

Lollobrigida gave birth to son Tommaso in May 2023 and says she returned to elite competition because she “wanted to show being a mum and top athlete is possible”.

She also said her great aunt, late Hollywood star Gina Lollobrigida, “would be really proud of me to show Lollobrigida's name in the sport”.
