Ilia Malinin is human after all.

And that's the routine done. Ilia Malinin has his head in his hands, he's verging on tears.

    He lands a backflip.

Malinin then goes down again. Nerves? What is going on?

Back on track with some triples.

Malinin tries a quad lutz but he doesn't land it, he hits the ice!

Malinin's other tricks have all come off. He's yet to do anything seriously difficult this early on into his routine though.

By my maths, Malinin needs 183.43 points to get gold.

He sets up to do a quad axel, but then pulls out at the last minute. He's still on his feet.

Yuma Kagiyama won't be celebrating in the way he'd hoped. Mikhail Shaidorov will though, he wasn't even expected to get the medal.

All of Ilia Malinin's competitors have stumbled, can he get the gold?

One final skater, the world is watching, it's time for Ilia Malinin.

There is a member of the Kazakhstan team in front of me in the stands going absolutely potty.

They are guaranteed a silver - at least.

It is enough to keep Yuma Kagiyama on the podium, he goes up to second with a total score of 280.06.

In first - Mikhail Shaidorov (Kazakhstan) - 291.58

    Third - Shun Sato (Japan) - 274.90

No disrespect to anyone but they don't need to worry about Ilia Malinin, just do your job.

I hope that was enought to keep Yuma Kagiyama on the podium but I don't think it was enough.

Yuma Kagiyama knew that he was going to be the competitor to Malinin. That is what chasing him does to someone.

A very strong finish from the Olympic silver medallist from Beijing Kagiyama, but I don't think he'll have enough after falling right at the start.

Is that what trying to chase Ilia Malinin does to you?

  17. Postpublished at 21:45 GMT 13 February

That'll help. Kagiyama lands a triple flip, then a triple loop and then a triple axel.

    Tripling up on those tripples.

    They're dropping like flies!

Of the last five skaters, the main medal contenders, only one has skated a clean routine.

Yuma Kagiyama can't land a quad flip. He hits the deck. Is that his gold chances gone?

Mikhail Shaidorov will be on the Olympic podium. Here comes Yuma Kagiyama. Many say he is the only one who can threaten that medal.
