I don't think I've ever wanted an athlete to succeed more than her. My heart was beating so fast!

It wasn't redemption, it was revenge. So many critics say 'she chokes in the Olympics' and it is the worst narrative ever. They forget what she went through four years ago.

For her to back it up from the World Cup, and deliver that performance, with a 1.5 second [lead], that is an eternity.

She just did her thing. She didn't have to be special, she just had to be herself.

Another beauty from Bruce Mouat. He's not been quite himself these last few matches, but he's growing in stature with every stone here. He clears out a troublesome red and wee Daniel Casper overthrows in response, allowing GB to steal another one.

In less positive news, Italy have edged ahead of Canada, but Norway are still losing to Switzerland.

The event started with a qualification round, with each athlete allowed two runs.

Their best run scores determined their ranking with the top 12 athletes progressing to the final.

In today's final, they will each have three runs for a chance of an Olympic medal.

They will take to the slope in the reverse order of their qualifying ranking and the best score from a single run determines the medals and placings.

New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski Synnott led the way in qualifying and the reigning world and Olympic champion is the woman to beat in this final.

  5. GB's Brookes not in slopestyle finalpublished at 13:34 GMT 18 February

British teenager Mia Brookes has already won the world title, however she failed to qualify for today's slopestyle final, which has just begun - after finishing an agonising fourth in the big air last week.

Yet she is a diamond on the British books and one of the biggest names in her sport.

At just 19, she could well lead the British challenge at multiple Winter Olympics in the future - if she decides to continue down that avenue.

That's because Brookes is a snowboarder's snowboarder, a "purist's dream", who takes far more joy in shredding on a powder day than competing on the world stage.

An exhibition slalom run which brings her the gold medal. She is unstoppable.

No Alpine skier has won two gold medals in the same discipline 12 years apart... until now.

Her margin was a second and a half. There was nothing wrong with her run at all.

She has rubber stamped her position as the best with her second Olympic slalom title and her third Olympic gold.

    SHE'S DONE IT!

Mikaela Shiffrin, 12 years after winning her first Olympic gold in slalom in Sochi, has another one to add to her collection.

She holds her nerve brilliantly to put down a scintillating time of one minute 39.10 seconds - a whole second and a half faster than Switzerland's Camille Rast in second.

Bruce Mouat has come to the party. A fine final stone asks a question of Danny Casper and the young American can't come up with the right answer. A steal in the first end.

Meanwhile, Switzerland take two against Norway in the first end and Italy have blanked their opener against Canada. Good news.

Here are the final standings from that women's aerials final. It was so close between second and fourth, and even Kaila Kuhn of the US wasn't too far off in fifth.

Xu Mengtao was a level above on that final jump, though. Tears of joy for her after making it back-to-back Olympic aerials gold medals...

    1. Xu Mengtao (China) - 112.90
    2. Danielle Scott (Australia) - 102.17
    3. Shao Qi (China) - 101.90
    4. Kong Fanyu (China) - 101.31

Xu Mengtao has defended her Olympic title!

The 35-year-old uses all her experience to produce when it really counts - her 112.90 could not be topped.

There is no clean sweep of the medals for China, though, as Danielle Scott lands a 102.17 and take silver.

Shao Qi gets bronze with Kong Fanyu dropping to fourth.

  19. 'Shiffrin in a comfortable position'published at 13:16 GMT 18 February

    Alpine skiing - women's slalom

    Chemmy Alcott
Four-time Olympic alpine ski racer on BBC One

This is the biggest advantage [0.82 seconds] we've ever had on a first run of slalom since 1960. It is massive. It is a relatively easy slalom so it is very hard for the others to make up that deficit. Especially the second run, we're hearing it is a much easier set.

She has been in this position so many times, she has been leading after the first run in so many world cups and delivered the win on the second run. She loves to go up a gear on the second run, but she doesn't need to do that today. Precision is the name of her game.

She knows how to do this, she will be relaxed after a great first run. This is a position she is comfortable in.
