Summary

  1. Djokovic fails to convert set point but serving for first setpublished at 15:28 BST 27 May

    *Djokovic 5-3 Royer

A classic return from Novak Djokovic, taking the ball early and sending it down the line for a winner - how many times have we seen that over the years?

A long rally results in Valentin Royer losing patience and firing a forehand long - it's set point Djokovic.

But the Frenchman does well to dodge the danger and then sends a beautiful backhand down the line to hold.

A brilliant contest by the end of it. Jones could have easily been out of it 6-0 6-1 and that's the way it was heading but she did an unbelievable job to take it to a tie-break and almost very nearly took the second set.

She got a little tight herself when she was trying to take that second set under her belt but she certainly caused enough problems for Bouzkova.

You have to admire Jones' attitude on the court - she has a plucky spirit, she fights, she scraps and has a beautiful slice backhand. Bouzkova was certainly made to earn that victory.

  3. Boulter is only Briton left in singlespublished at 15:24 BST 27 May

    Jones 0-6 6-7 (3-7) Bouzkova

Francesca Jones' exit leaves Katie Boulter as the only British player remaining in the singles competitions at Roland Garros.

Boulter takes on 28th seed Anastasia Potapova tomorrow.

For Jones, achieving a first ever win at a Grand Slam means this will remain a memorable tournament, especially after the struggles she has had this year following her freak gym accident.

  4. Djokovic extends lead in first setpublished at 15:22 BST 27 May

    Djokovic 5-2 Royer*

Novak Djokovic is ahead but doesn't seem to be enjoying the conditions hugely. Serving into the sun, he aborts a couple of ball tosses and mutters at his box.

Yet it's another routine game for the Serb, who holds to love, and is now just one game from taking the opening set.

    Starodubtseva 3-6 3-0 Rybakina*

Elena Rybakina might have won the first set, but she's struggling out on Court Suzanne Lenglen at the minute.

Yuliia Starodubtseva has won five of the last six games and gone a break up early in the second set.

    *Djokovic 4-2 Royer

A wild forehand approach shot by Valentin Royer hands Novak Djokovic three break points.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion needs just one, using all the stretchiness of his elastic body to defend before launching an attack, which results in him passing Royer and earning the first break of the match.

Who comes out on top here is anyone's guess...

    *Djokovic 2-2 Royer

Valentin Royer comes under a bit of pressure on his serve, with Novak Djokovic taking him to deuce.

    *Jones 0-6 6-5 Bouzkova

Francesca Jones can't take her first break point - but Marie Bouzkova presents another one to the Briton with yet another double fault.

    *Starodubtseva 3-6 0-0 Rybakina

Elena Rybakina raced into a 5-1 lead in the opening set of her match and although she was broken with her first attempt to serve out the set, she gets it done at the second time of asking.

The second seed had to save a couple of break points in that decisive game, though.

  18. Djokovic nudges aheadpublished at 15:05 BST 27 May

    Djokovic 2-1 Royer*

Novak Djokovic looks comfortable as he edges ahead in the opening stages of the match.

It's a decent crowd in Philippe-Chatrier, and so far there seems to be a fairly even spread of support - some for the 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, others for local boy Valentin Royer, who comes from Paris.

  19. Break point Jonespublished at 15:02 BST 27 May

    Jones 0-6 5-5 Bouzkova*

Frustration for Marie Bouzkova, who double-faults on game point.

And that could prove very costly, too, as Francesca Jones forces her way to a break point...

  20. Royer holdspublished at 15:00 BST 27 May

    *Djokovic 1-1 Royer

Valentin Royer is playing only his second Roland Garros and his opening-round win was his first-ever victory at the French Open.

Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, is looking for his 103rd win here.

But it's an impressive first service game from 24-year-old Royer, who drops just one point as he holds.
