I know it is literally the old cliche, but Roman Safiullin will be thinking about taking this next game one point at a time. He just cannot afford to do anything else. He is in the zone right now, the bottom line is he doesn't want to come out of that.

If he wins this match, I don't think he will have played a better match in his life. It will be interesting to see what he says afterwards because this is a masterclass of grass-court tennis.

    Osaka 1-0 Kasatkina*

Well, that first game had a little bit of everything.

Osaka closed out the hold to 15 with an ace.

Trouble for Joao Fonseca as Roman Safiullin puts away a volley at the net for two break points.

Fonseca saves the first of them and then dives at full stretch to volley a winner to save the second. Any World Cup goalkeeper would have been proud of that one!

Meanwhile, Anna Kalinskaya has completed the break back on Court Three and is now 2-1 up in the decider against Belinda Bencic.

Usually the show courts don’t fill up until play is under way, but there are plenty of people who got to Court One early to make sure they saw Naomi Osaka’s entrance.

Another day, another showstopper outfit. She’s swapped the kimono and obi - traditional Japanese wear - for a full-length, flower-patterned robe that floats behind her as she strides out.

Daria Kasatkina, a former top-10 player, has seen her ranking slump to 65th over the past 18 months due to a downturn in form and a hip injury which plagued the first half of her 2026 season.

After exiting the French Open in the third round, she lost all three of her matches on grass - including bowing out of Eastbourne in qualifying - and has taken the scenic route into the third round at Wimbledon.

She required three sets to see off 18-year-old Brit Mimi Xu in round one before coming from behind to beat Janice Tjen on Wednesday.

Kasatkina is attempting to reach the second week at Wimbledon for the second time.

  14. Bencic saves break pointspublished at 13:05 BST 3 July

    *Bencic 6-4 4-6 0-1 Kalinskaya

Belinda Bencic shows her frustration after falling 0-40 down on serve, her coach telling her to keep her head up from the stand.

She responds with three straight points to get back to deuce.

  15. 'Dream-like stuff'published at 13:03 BST 3 July

    Safiullin 6-3 6-3 3-2 Fonseca*

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC Two

Forehand exchanges are Joao Fonseca's biggest weapon, so the fact that Roman Safiullin is hitting his forehands better than him is dream-like stuff.

It is incredible. I think his forehands, his variety and his body serves have been the main factors for his lead here. He has executed all of those things unbelievably well today.

    Job done.

Defending champions Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool have survived a bit of a scare against French pair Corentin Moutet and Arthur Reymond in the second round.

Having lost the first as they served to stay in it, they stepped up their game with the home crowd right behind them in the second and third to come through in three sets.

The British pair now wait to find out who they will face in the third round as they continue the defence of their title.

    Osaka v Kasatkina

Naomi Osaka is enjoying arguably the most productive grass-court swing of her career.

She reached her maiden final on the surface at Bad-Homburg in June but was forced to retire in the second set with an injured right ankle.

Since arriving in London, she's cruised into round three with consecutive straight-sets wins over Elsa Jacquemot and Anastasia Gasanova.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has won all three of her previous meetings with Daria Kasatkina.

  19. Fonseca break 'could only be a matter of time'published at 12:57 BST 3 July

    Safiullin 6-3 6-3 2-1 Fonseca*

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC Two

I know Joao Fonseca didn't break serve there, but hopefully in his mind he is thinking: 'OK, I'm getting closer'.

If he takes care of business and holds his serve, I reckon he is getting closer. It could only be a matter of time, not that there's that much time left. It does feel like there could be one more opportunity for him to break though.

Fonseca has had five break points in the match but is yet to take one.

  20. Safiullin saves break point to holdpublished at 12:55 BST 3 July

    Safiullin 6-3 6-3 2-1 Fonseca*

The start of the comeback? Joao Fonseca gets a break point but Roman Safiullin, as he has been throughout the match, is equal to the task and saves it.

The Russian qualifier leads by two sets and it's 2-1 on serve in the third.
