    *Williams 3-4 Joint

Nervy moments for Serena Williams as a double fault is followed by a bruising backhand return winner from Maya Joint.

She responds with a well-placed wide serve for 30-all but sends a forehand wide to offer up a break point.

Serena Williams has plenty of family support on Centre Court, with husband Alexis Ohanian and both her children watching from the players' box, as well as her sister Venus.

The big name in Maya Joint's box is Sam Stosur - a former US Open singles champion, two-time Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, and a thoroughly enjoyable player to watch back in the day.

Luck is on Serena Williams' side! She does well to anticipate Maya Joint's drive volley onto her backhand but a handy net cord helps her return land in. 40-30.

However, the American loses her radar on the next point.

We stay on serve in the first set on centre court.

I've been able to get a quite good look at Rennae Stubbs and Jarmere in Serena Williams' coaching box.

Jarmere is actually shouting to tell her to have more discipline on her returns.

There's a lot of instruction coming her way but most of it is to get to the forehand, be disciplined and stay low with the legs.

    Williams 3-3 Joint*

Serena Williams comes on the approach for the first time and sends down a powerful forehand which a scrambling Maya Joint struggles to get a racquet on. 40-0.

Joint responds in style, placing a fizzing down-the-line forehand into the corner of the court at the end of a lengthy exchange but Williams secures the hold with an ace.

That's the ticket for Maya Joint. Hit the lines and leave Serena Williams rooted to the spot.

The 44-year-old isn't making much of an attempt to reach those down-the-line winners from the Australian.

Maya Joint moved to her right to observe the pace on that backhand wing. It should be a clue for Serena Williams to try to attack her opponent's forehand.

I know it's early days but Joint is only getting 41% of her first serves in.

Great Britain will have a fourth representative in the second round of the singles draws over the next two days.

Jan Choinski has beaten Czech Vit Kopriva in straight sets to reach round two at Wimbledon for the second time in his career.

Choinski joins British trio Katie Swan, Arthur Fery and Jacob Fearnley in round two.

American 17th seed Frances Tiafoe, who has just started his first-round match, might be Choinski's second-round opponent.

Maya Joint saves the first break point, with Serena Williams looking a bit laboured moving to her backhand side and planting the ball in the net.

And the Australian quickly dispatches the second, opening up the court and driving home a forehand winner.

Back-to-back unforced errors from Maya Joint - both on her forehand wing - give Serena Williams a foothold in the game.

I'm feeling a lot of tension. Just the fact that four of us are on commentary for a first-round match shows just how big this encounter is.

But, with the roof closed and being courtside, it just feels nerve-wracking - and I think both players are feeling that at the minute.

Serena Williams hasn't quite got her timing on the return, she has been trying to step inside the baseline but it just looks a little bit off. I watched a lot of her practice and she has been working a lot on serve and first ball. First-strike tennis is what's going to win her any sort of singles match.

I'm looking to see how well Serena Williams is moving tonight. That's true of most players on the tour right now, but especially true when you've had a couple of kids and you're 44 years old.

I'll also be looking at her serve because that's the greatest weapon in the history of this great game.

She looks fit out there. Her heart rate has got to be pumping though, it is unbelievable that we're sitting here right now.

    *Williams 1-2 Joint

Maya Joint shows little emotion as she sends Serena Williams scrambling to the back corner of the court with a forehand winner. 15-0.

A small wipe of the nose as she completes a hold to love of her own. She's looking quite unfazed by it all. This is her Centre Court debut, remember.
