Is the pressure telling for Roman Safiullin?

The qualifier's forehand suddenly goes awry with the first set there for the taking, a couple of loose shots and Novak Djokovic has broken back.

Djokovic even gave Safiullin a freebie point at 0-15 with a very poor backhand into the net. The most unforced of unforced errors.

Chances come and go for 28-year-old Roman Safiullin.

He is going to have to hit the reset button here to try to serve out this opening set.

Novak Djokovic keeps this first set going, for one more game at least.

He had to dig deep to hold serve but now he needs to break.

Qualifier Roman Safiullin is serving for the first set.

  4. Djokovic saves two set pointspublished at 14:18 BST 5 July

    *Safiullin 5-2 Djokovic

Novak Djokovic finds two big serves - both aces - to save the two set points.

He's not out of this service game just yet, though.

  5. Set point Safiullinpublished at 14:16 BST 5 July

    *Safiullin 5-2 Djokovic

Big moment as Roman Safiullin brings up a set point... Novak Djokovic saves that one but then goes long to offer another.

  6. 'Two points away'published at 14:16 BST 5 July

Novak Djokovic is just trying to force the issue at the minute because Roman Safiullin has been doing a great job in these rallies.

He is just two points away from the first set, so Djokovic knows he has to hold on to ask the question of Safiullin.

  7. Pegula breakspublished at 14:14 BST 5 July

This is better from fourth seed Jessica Pegula as she finally finds some consistency with her shots to secure the break.

Pegula continues to make Iva Jovic play as she pushes her back in the rallies, and it pays off as the 16th seed is forced into mistakes.

Now, can Pegula follow the break up by holding serve? That's something she failed to do on multiple occasions in the first set.

Given the amount of time Safiullin has spent on court over the last couple of weeks, the fact he’s still playing with this much energy is ridiculous. At this point, just change the spelling of his name to Sa'fuel'in - amazing match so far, this year's surprise package.

This is bigger serving than I recall from Roman Safiullin.

Down 0-15, it's a big point for Roman Safiullin and he plays it well. He has to race in to reach a drop shot from Novak Djokovic, responding with one of his own and then reacts well with a volley at the net.

Not in full control but the ball just drops in and he clinches the hold with an ace down the T.

Djokovic is up against it in this first set.

Eye drops for Novak Djokovic at the change of ends following the fifth game… he’s still competitive even when he can’t see properly.

But, while he isn’t rubbing his eyes as much any more, he has a different problem to deal with now.

Free-hitting qualifier Roman Safiullin is in charge of the first set, is playing with real belief, and has plenty of backing from the Centre Court crowd.

  12. 'He is pulling Djokovic off the court'published at 14:08 BST 5 July

Tim Henman said it, Roman Safiullin is hitting with margin right now. It is a confidence shot and it is causing problems for Novak Djokovic. He is pulling him off the court.

He hits his backhand a lot flatter, but that forehand is on target.

  13. Safiullin's shots 'coming with pace'published at 14:06 BST 5 July

Roman Safiullin is showing great racquet head acceleration at the moment.

His shots are coming with pace but with margin for error.

This has been very impressive from Roman Safiullin. He's hitting his forehand with real power and, for the moment at least, is getting it deep into the corners as well.

Novak Djokovic then double faults at 0-30 to gift his opponent three break points.

    Safiullin only needs one!

That forehand comes up trumps again, moving Djokovic one way then the other before the Serb slaps the ball into the net.

  15. 'Djokovic will rise to the whole occasion'published at 14:04 BST 5 July

I don't expect an upset here. I just think Novak Djokovic will rise to the whole occasion. He is aiming to get to 106 wins at Wimbledon to get ahead of Roger Federer, so that will be a big motivation for him to lock in and put in a good performance today.

  16. Jovic holdspublished at 14:03 BST 5 July

    *Pegula 4-6 0-1 Jovic

It feels like this match is there for the taking if either player can sort out their service games.

That's a promising start to the second set for 16th seed Iva Jovic as she outplays Jessica Pegula in a rally before arrowing a backhand winner down the line.

Jovic holds to 15 as Pegula is off target once again with a forehand.

Well, those two early breaks already seem a while ago.

Another straightforward hold for Roman Safuillin. Strong serving and he's following it up with some solid groundstrokes.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic has the eye drops out at the change of ends.

After Novak Djokovic wasted no time in asserting himself in this match, the noises which follow Roman Safiullin’s immediate response tell you that many here inside Centre Court are surprised to see the seven-time champion fail to consolidate his early advantage.

Djokovic has been repeatedly wiping his eyes with his shirt between points, and his occasional glare up at the sky suggested the sun was bothering him when serving at our end of the court.

Clearly no such issues when he heads down to serve at the Royal Box end, however.

No messing around on serve from Novak Djokovic this time.

He holds to love as a wayward Roman Safuillin backhand flies into the stands.
