  1. Carter pulls frame backpublished at 17:22 BST 20 April

    Higgins 9-7 Carter

Ali Carter knocks in a break of 54 before missing a tough on along the bottom cushion.

It gives John Higgins a slight chance of an unlikely steal but the 'Wizard of Wishaw' isn't able to deliver on this occasion, missing a long red to the bottom right corner.

Carter is out of his chair in a flash and closes in with his second half century of the frame.

    Wu 6-1 Lei

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

It's all good stuff from Wu Yize. He's had breaks of 93, 92, 85 and 67 in this one. He was given a chance again in this frame but didn't he take it well? Lei Peifan is going to have win the next two frames to have any hope.

  3. Wu in complete controlpublished at 17:13 BST 20 April

    Wu 6-1 Lei

    Groundhog day for Lei Peifan.

A simple red is once again rattled against the jaws of the pocket to bring to an end a promising break of 36.

Wu Yize is not quite so charitable to his opponent on his visit to the table.

He swaggers his way to a break of 67 during a clearance with some crisp potting. Wu is in total control of this contest.

  4. 'Odds on' - Hearn tips 2029 Worlds to stay in UKpublished at 17:06 BST 20 April

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at the Crucible

Barry Hearn says he expects the World Snooker Championship to remain in the United Kingdom in 2029 when Sheffield's Crucible Theatre is redeveloped.

Last month, it was announced that the sport's biggest tournament, which has been held at the small but atmospheric venue since 1977, would remain there until 2045.

However, part of that deal includes the building being revamped to add 500 additional seats to take the capacity from around 1,000 to 1,500.

While that work is taking place after the 2028 edition, the tournament is scheduled to be staged at an alternative venue in 2029, and possibly 2030, with overseas destinations like China being tipped as a potential host.

"If I was a gambling man I would go odds on it stays in the UK, but being the money man I am, if the right offer comes in I will have to consider it," said Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, who have owned a controlling stake in World Snooker since 2010.

"Great Britain is the home of snooker, it is where we grew up as a sport, and I'm very loath to move it anywhere else. I have a great relationship with the BBC and you don't want to take it anywhere that has a different time zone.

"There are opportunities to take it elsewhere but these opportunities come with down sides. It's a one or two-year gap, but everyone will put pressure on to make it just one year away. We have to really try to make it just one year."

  5. Higgins moves within frame of victorypublished at 17:03 BST 20 April

    Higgins 9-6 Carter

John Higgins moves within a frame from victory after a half century put him in charge.

There are a few signs of frustration as Ali Carter misses a blue to the bottom right corner and that allows his opponent to polish off the balls he needs to take a three-frame lead.

    Wu 5-1 Lei

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

  7. Ruthless Wu on toppublished at 16:48 BST 20 April

    Wu 5-1 Lei

One frame wrestled back by Lei Peifan but then the next frame reverts to type with Wu Yize back to his ruthless self.

Lei was 28-0 in front but a long pot towards the baulk end does not even get close to the pocket and his compatriot springs up from his seat.

Wu Yize show's his dexterity to switch to playing left-handed with a red on the cushion.

He misses the pink during the clearance but a composed break of 85 helps him regain a four-frame advantage at 5-1.

  8. Higgins edges further aheadpublished at 16:44 BST 20 April

    Higgins 8-6 Carter

Talk about tense. John Higgins was in first and then Ali Carter put himself in a great position to win the frame with a half century.

But when the world number 23 gets a safety wrong, Higgins is on hand to punish him and mop up all the remaning balls to open up a two-frame lead.

  9. Postpublished at 16:35 BST 20 April

    Wu 4-1 lei

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

  10. Lei gets a frame on the boardpublished at 16:34 BST 20 April

    Wu 4-1 Lei

The first half of the session was a story of Wu Yize capitalising on the smallest of errors made by Lei Peifan.

It initially looks like also being the narrative of this next stage of the match when Lei blunders on a red to the middle pocket after a break of 30.

On this occasion, though, Wu lets him off the hook following a few attempts at snookering his opponent.

Lei proceeds to dispose of all of the colours to get himself a frame on the board.

    Higgins 7-6 Carter

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Two

It's hard to know what John feels about his chances here. He's not going to be overawed by anybody and he knows how good he still is in the game.

Perhaps the best way to get the most success is to not think too far into the future.

  13. Higgins leads at mid-session intervalpublished at 15:58 BST 20 April

    Higgins 7-6 Carter

Ali Carter thinks he has John Higgins tucked up behind the yellow but when the white just runs short the Scot is able to pick out a plant to set up a frame-winning chance.

The four-time world champion gets 66 points ahead with 59 available by the time the Englishman gets back to the table and decides he's had enough.

  15. Clinical Wu in controlpublished at 15:55 BST 20 April

    Wu 4-0 Lei

Once again Lei Peifan blunders on a red into a corner pocket with the rest - rattling it against the jaws.

Wu Yize trails Lei by 24 points to 47 but confidently goes about his business.

A couple of Wu's colours wobble on the way into the pocket prompting gasps from the crowd and a smirk from the 22-year-old.

Wu safely negotiates a slightly tricky position on the blue into the middle pocket before potting the pink to steal the frame.

Lei has made a few small errors but has been ruthlessly punished.

  16. Century break draws Carter levelpublished at 15:40 BST 20 April

    Higgins 6-6 Carter

A scrappy start to the frame.

John Higgins slams in a superb long pot but poor positioning off the brown forces him to attempt an audacious three ball - which does not come off.

Ali Carter eventually manages to find some rhythm at the table but with three reds towards the baulk cushion he has to produce some smart cueing.

A break of 106 seals the frame for the Englishman, though.

    All square.

    Wu 3-0 Lei

    Dennis Taylor

What a start by Wu Yize - he is going to be a bit of stopping now. Lei Peifan is sitting in his seat thinking he should have won that frame.

    Wu 3-0 Lei

Lei Peifan clocks up a break of 58 before playing a shot to nothing on a red which misses the middle pocket.

A mini safety battle ensues before Lei misses a simple blue into the middle pocket to open the door for Wu Yize.

With the kind of form that Wu a clearance feels inevitable. And it is.

Wu Yize has a wonderful cue action. He's a really good player to watch. Lei Peifan has only made two mistakes and it's cost him both frames
