Scarlets full-back Jac Davies does brilliantly to field a loose kick before stepping Henry Pollock with ease.

But has he takes the contact, he appears to take a bang to his head and we have a break in play here.

Touch wood, he's ok. The collisions have been thunderous so far.

    Northampton 0-7 Scarlets

The Northampton front row turning the screw here. That is two scrums, two penalties.

It sets up an attacking lineout platform but full-back James Ramm is tackled into touch out wide. In his defence, he was given a poor pass by Alex Mitchell.

Not the best start to this game for Mitchell.

    Northampton 0-7 Scarlets

Replays exonerate Henry Pollock. It was a hard hit but not a dangerous one.

Jake Ball will surely need a 'HIA' here though. He's sitting but looks groggy.

    Ouch.

Jake Ball comes onto the ball at pace metres from the line, only to be hammered back by Henry Pollock and the second row knocks on.

He's not got back up and the medical staff are on here. In the meantime, both sides take a breather and referee Julian Castaignede wants a look at that collision.

    Northampton v Scarlets (15:15 GMT)

After taking his first session with the squad on Tuesday, former Wales centre Davies talked up his side's chances of producing a huge shock this afternoon.

"Not many people give us much of a chance, and understandably," said Davies.

"They're a fantastic team and at this moment in time we've not been on the right end of results.

"We've simplified things and we've taken noise away. I've been delighted with the way that the players have trained and bought into it. There's a genuine excitement around the group to take on this huge opportunity. Belief is everything and we've got the talent. We've got to play to what is a very basic game plan that is based on a lot of the old values of the Scarlets, but in the context of a new era."

Meanwhile, Northampton Saints lock Chunya Munga has talked up the extra spice around an Anglo-Welsh clash.

"We know it won’t be an easy game; it will be tough,” Munga said.

“But for this group of players, it will be perfect. We want to kick on in Europe. We all grew up watching England vs Wales and know the importance of that fixture, so I’m pretty sure it will be a feisty contest.

“I love playing for this team. I think it will be a very tough contest against a Scarlets side that will be very physical."

  18. Davies takes charge as Costelow makes his comebackpublished at 15:09 GMT 18 January

    Northampton v Scarlets (15:15 GMT)

It's been a strange week at Scarlets.

After the announcement that Nigel Davies would return to the club as interim director of rugby, it soon emerged he would be taking charge of selection, a development which has served to further ramp up the pressure on head coach Dwayne Peele.

Davies has at least been boosted for his opening selection by Wales fly-half Sam Costelow returning from injury. Costelow hasn’t played since the round two tie in Bordeaux in December because of an ankle injury picked up in training.

He comes in as one of three personnel changes from the dramatic 47-38 home defeat to Pau last Saturday. With Tom Rogers ruled out with a groin injury, Blair Murray switches to the wing and Jac Davies gets the nod at full-back.

With Costelow back at number ten, Joe Hawkins moves to inside centre and Eddie James to 13 in place of the injured Joe Roberts. Archie Hughes continues at scrum-half following his standout display last week.

Up front, Max Douglas returns from suspension to partner Jake Ball in the second row.

Scarlets: J Davies; Mee, James, Hawkins, Murray; Costelow, A Hughes; Mathias, Elias, H Thomas, Douglas, Ball, Plumtree, Macleod (capt), Anderson.

Replacements: Van der Merwe, Hepburn, Harri O'Connor, J Taylor, Davis, G Davies, Page, T Lewis.

  19. Skipper Dingwall returns from concussion lay-offpublished at 15:07 GMT 18 January

    Northampton v Scarlets (15:15 GMT)

Head coach Sam Vesty has opted for changes following the harrowing 50-28 defeat in Bordeaux last weekend.

Josh Kemeny and Fraser Dingwall start after recovering from the concussion they sustained against Harlequins on 3 January, with the latter captaining the side instead of the injured Rory Hutchinson.

James Ramm has overcome a hamstring issue to line up at full-back while Tom Lockett, who has not played since picking up a leg injury on England A duty in November, is named among the replacements as he bids to make his 50th appearance for Saints.

England Under-20s full-back James Pater is also on the bench and will make his Champions Cup debut should he enter the action. Anthony Belleau again starts at fly-half, with Fin Smith remains sidelined with a calf issue so Anthony Belleau again starts at outside half, but Manny Iyogun has recovered from a shoulder knock and will start in place of Danilo Fischetti.

Elsewhere, Robbie Smith replaces Craig Wright at hooker and Chunya Munga comes into the second row instead of Alex Coles. Tom Pearson is also rested and Callum Chick drops to the bench, with Kemeny and Sam Graham starting in the back row.

Northampton: Ramm; Todaro, Freeman, Dingwall (Capt), Sleightholme; Belleau, Mitchell; Iyogun, Smith, Davison; Munga, Van Der Mescht; Kemeny, Graham, Pollock.

Replacements: Wright, Fischetti, Mills, Lockett, Chick, McParland, Pater, Hendy.

    Northampton v Scarlets (15:15 GMT)

    BBC Sport Wales reporter

Welcome to Northampton and the culmination of Pool Four of the European Champions Cup.

For the home side, runners up in this competition last season, the equation is now clearer following that Bristol defeat against Bordeaux.

They are already through to the knockout stages, but now need just a win to secure second place in the Pool and a better seeding for the last-16.

As for Scarlets, that bonus point win for Pretoria Bulls in Pau on Friday night would have left fans with mixed emotions. On the one had, it keeps alive their hopes of a dramatic qualification for the knockout stages. On the other, it's heighted the likelihood that by 5.15pm today, they will be out of Europe altogether.

The Welsh side, rock bottom of the United Rugby Championship, will progress in Europe's premier competition if they not only secure a win, but score four tries in the process. A win without a bonus point will mean a place in the European Challenge Cup last-16. Anything less, and their season is effectively over.

Recent form suggests they're going to be up against it.
