Super League: Hull KR seal League Leaders' Shield with win over Warrington

Onto step two of the treble.

In September, Hull KR finally crossed the line to seal the League Leaders' Shield and announce themselves as a major player in the northern hemisphere.

Having spent virtually all season in top spot, Willie Peters' side won their first nine games in a row but were eventually defeated by Wigan.

Undeterred, they then went on an 11-game winning run and eventually crossed the line by beating Warrington.

It was a particularly momentous occasion for the club after they lost out on the title to Wigan by just two points in 2024.

Lewis converts late Davies try to win Challenge Cup for Hull KR

It all began at an unseasonably chilly and drizzly Wembley.

But the weather meant little for the travelling Hull KR supporters, who witnessed their side win the Challenge Cup in dramatic fashion.

The Robins showed their title-winning credentials having beaten Warrington Wolves courtesy of Tom Davies' late try with three minutes left on the clock.

Davies made a sensational last-ditch dive to ground the ball from Tyrone May's grubber kick, with the talismanic Mikey Lewis kicking the extras to ensure their first Challenge Cup final triumph since 1980.

The sensation of winning is an addictive one.

Whether it's the fizz of champagne bubbling on the tongue, the feeling of completion mixed intoxicatingly with the ecstasy of achievement, or even the monetary rewards, those who have enjoyed success crave it greedily.

Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella is no exception.

In 2025, Minchella got his hands on all the prizes; the first Robin since the great Roger Millward to lift a Challenge Cup, the first since David Watkinson to raise the prize for securing the top-flight championship.

Winning Super League for the first time gives Rovers a crack at a trophy no Robin has ever won - the World Club Challenge.

Thursday's showpiece against Australia's National Rugby League premiers Brisbane Broncos will give Minchella and his team-mates the chance to box off their 2025 successes and earn the mantle of best club team in the world.

You can read the rest of Matt Newsum's feature here."St Helens, Leeds, Wigan and Bradford, to name just four, all won World Club Challenges and we want to remembered for winning this game," Minchella told BBC Sport.

  4. Why is tonight's game not taking place at Craven Park?published at 19:12 GMT 19 February

Hull KR v Brisbane (19:30 GMT)

Around 24,000 fans are set to be in attendance for tonight's World Club Challenge, but it's not taking place at Craven Park, the home of Hull KR.

    So why is that?

The Robins negotiated the use of the home of their fierce rivals Hull FC, the MKM Stadium, for tonight's game due to its superior capacity.

Craven Park seats around 12,000 people and its lower capacity would have left many fans locked out of tonight's fixture as well as limiting KR's ability to generate revenue.

  5. Lewis avoids suspension ahead of tonight's gamepublished at 19:09 GMT 19 February

Hull KR half-back Mikey Lewis avoided a suspension that would have ruled him out of tonight's World Club Challenge.

The England international was sin-binned in last Thursday's shock defeat at Super League newcomers York Knights for a trip on Liam Harris.

He was given five penalty points in the aftermath by the Rugby Football League's match review panel, one short of the six that would have seen him handed a one-game ban.

On Lewis' yellow card, which came when his side were 18-6 up before losing 19-18, Hull KR head coach Willie Peters told BBC Radio Humberside: "It was there to see what Mikey did. He needs to learn from what he did because it was a key moment in the game.

"He knows and he's owned it, but I want to see some action off the back of it."

  6. What happened to the 2025 World Club Challenge?published at 19:06 GMT 19 February

Hull KR v Brisbane (19:30 GMT)

Wigan Warriors are currently the reigning champions of the World Club Challenge having defeated then-NRL Premiers Penrith Panthers at the Brick Community Stadium two years ago.

But what happened last year? Why wasn't there a World Club Challenge to see who could establish their dominance in the club game?

With Wigan travelling to Las Vegas for the debut Rugby League Las Vegas game last March - an event organised by the NRL - the decision was taken not to hold the fixture in 2025.

As for this year, however, despite Hull KR's involvement in this year's Vegas match-up, the fixture was pencilled in for this evening after Brisbane agreed to travel to the UK rather than hosting the fixture Down Under.

Million Pound Game: Gareth O'Brien's incredible drop-goal saves Salford

Would you believe it, but it's actually less than a decade since Hull KR lost their Super League status in agonising fashion.

Having taken on Salford Red Devils in the 2016 Million Pound Game, the Robins had led 18-10 with two minutes left at Craven Park.

The rest, as they say, is history, with Niall Evalds and Greg Johnson combining to take it to golden point, which led to Gareth O'Brien's iconic drop-goal.

Just over nine years later and the contrasting fortunes of the two sides make for pretty stark reading, with Salford being liquidated in the High Court shortly after Hull KR won a historic treble on the way to setting up tonight's meeting with Brisbane Broncos.

The greatest game returns for what could be one of the greatest games of this season.

Reigning Super League champions Hull KR welcome NRL Premiers Brisbane Broncos to east Yorkshire with the two ready to tussle for supremacy.

But can Hull KR add a maiden World Club Challenge title to their impressive recent roster?

Or will the Broncos mean business when they arrive on British soil?
