    *Nadal 1-1 Tiafoe

Lovely shot. Rafael Nadal follows up a fine first serve with a curved forehand into the corner which wrong-foots Frances Tiafoe.

But Tiafoe springs into action, shuffling into the net to pop away an angled volley in response for 30-15.

  2. GB's Skupski in doubles actionpublished at 19:41 BST 5 September 2022

    Purcell/Ebden 1-2 Koolhof/Skupski

Cameron Norrie might have fallen but there are still a smattering of Brits in the doubles events.

Neal Skupski is one - he and Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof are currently taken on Aussie duo Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden in the men's round of 16.

Purcell and Ebden lifted the Wimbledon title together earlier this year, but things are on serve in the early stages at Flushing Meadows.

The court is now entirely covered in shade, which will be a huge relief to both players in incredibly humid conditions in New York.

That's nice and cool from Frances Tiafoe. The American ticks off a love hold to quickly level at the start of this match. Encouraging start!

  4. Nadal holdspublished at 19:38 BST 5 September 2022

    Nadal 1-0 Tiafoe*

Frances Tiafoe looks annoyed at himself after just missing the line with a cross-court backhand, having been allowed a look at a second serve at 30-30.

It means Nadal is able to wriggle free to safety in his opening service game.

  5. Postpublished at 19:36 BST 5 September 2022

    *Nadal 0-0 Tiafoe

A nice, clean start for Rafael Nadal as an ace takes him to 30-0, but there's a big cheer from the crowd as home favourite Frances Tiafoe gets on the board following a Nadal mis-hit.

Mumbles in the crowd follow a double-fault from the four-time champion.

    Nadal v Tiafoe

There have been some concerning moments for Rafael Nadal at the US Open so far, not least when he trailed Fabio Fognini by a set and a break in round two.

But his following win over Richard Gasquet, in straight sets, will have felt very nice indeed.

"My best match in the tournament," said Nadal. "It's easy to say that because the other day was tough. But important improvement.

"I need to keep going. It's a good victory for me. I went through some difficult moments. That's something that is good, that I went through that and [I was] safe with positive feelings."

After slow starts to his opening matches against Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata and Italian Fabio Fognini, Rafael Nadal faced no such problems as he recorded his first straight-set win of the 2022 US Open against Spaniard Richard Gasquet to reach the fourth round.

It means he is 22-0 at Grand Slams this year. Who knows what he might have achieved had he not been forced to withdraw from his Wimbledon semi-final with injury...
