Nadal 4-6 1-0 Tiafoe*
Nadal scoops a forehand wide and then frames a return into the crowd as Tiafoe takes charge on serve.
The American looks like he's refocused quickly.
Nadal 4-6 1-0 Tiafoe*
Rafael Nadal gets the second set up and running.
No obvious issues for the Spaniard, the only change is his clothes are much drier, for now.
He's quickly into a 40-0 lead on serve, before Tiafoe nets another return to confirm the hold.

"How many minutes has he been gone?" inquires Tiafoe.
Eight and a half minutes, Frances.
Eventually Nadal returns. Then sits down to go through his pre-game routine.
Must have taken a wrong turning in the guts of Ashe...
*Nadal 4-6 0-0 Tiafoe
The longer this goes on, the more concerning it becomes from Rafael Nadal's point of view.
Oh, here he is! Nine minutes later, Nadal is back on the court. And he appears to be OK.
*Nadal 4-6 0-0 Tiafoe
Frances Tiafoe is trying to find out exactly what is happening from the umpire.
It's been seven minutes since the last point. The umpire is on his walkie talkie trying to get answers.
*Swiatek 2-6 4-2 Niemeier
Top seed Iga Swiatek, who was a set and a break down, now has a break of her own.
The Polish world number one has all the momentum now, forcing unseeded Jule Niemeier into a string of errors.
It's all to play for on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

I wonder if the trainer is for the blisters on Nadal's hand, and there is a lot going on because he wants to go off court and he wants to drag the physio with him!
*Nadal 4-6 0-0 Tiafoe
Lots of work for Rafael Nadal to do.
The Spaniard heads off court to change clothes at the end of the set, but he's also accompanied by his physio.
There was a slight change in Nadal's body language and approach towards the end of the first set, attempting more serve and volleying and appearing to pull out of one forehand so as to not overreach. Could the abdominal injury be bothering him?

World number one Iga Swiatek goes down a set and a break as she misfires a volley into the net.
But Jule Niemeier can't see out her next service game as the top seed finds her second wind and breaks back with some brilliant forehand winners.
This is a fourth-round thriller on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
*Nadal 4-6 0-0 Tiafoe
He won't let the third one pass him by, though!

A double fault cancels out Tiafoe's first set point.
How about number two?
An excellent backhand return from Rafael Nadal. He just doesn't quit.
Nadal 4-5 Tiafoe*
Nadal has just fallen off the pace slightly.
Tiafoe? He's very much on it.
Three set points!
Nadal 4-5 Tiafoe*
Here we go then. Frances Tiafoe, serving to take the first set against Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of his home Slam.
Can he deliver the goods and get Arthur Ashe Stadium rocking?

If he goes for shots like that, Frances is going to get the crowd on his side. that was flashy.
Nadal is very much going to the far towel box, where the coaching team are.
Nadal 4-5 Tiafoe*
A little bit of the old serve and volley from Nadal helps the Spaniard force Tiafoe to serve for the set.
*Nadal 3-5 Tiafoe
Rafael Nadal is warm. Very warm. He's now taking the balls straight from the ball boys and girls between serves, rather than keeping any in his pocket, because of the amount he's sweating in the New York heat.
Frances Tiafoe sends a blistering backhand cross-court return into the corner for 30-30. He wants to end the set here!
*Swiatek 2-6 1-1 Niemeier
Top seed Iga Swiatek didn't have a single break point in the first set but she gets two at the start of the second against unseeded Jule Niemeier.
Both times though the German responds with big serves before getting out of the game with a classy winner.
The shock is still on.

Laura Robson

I think Tiafoe knows that he isn't going to outlast Nadal from the baseline - he has to be aggressive and keep the points short and open up the lines.
*Nadal 3-5 Tiafoe
Tiafoe uses his serve to get himself to safety, bringing the first set into view with his fourth ace of the contest. Game of the match so far, that.
