    *Norrie 3-3 Rublev

The longest rally of the match so far goes the way of Rublev as Norrie angles a backhand wide over the tramlines.

That's the only encouragement Rublev needs, belting down an ace on his way to a love hold of his own.

  2. Norrie holds to lovepublished at 16:25 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie 3-2 Rublev*

If this match were to be decided on kit alone then Andrey Rublev would hands down be the winner. Norrie's is very... bright.

There's a cry of annoyance from Rublev as a Norrie forehand goes whizzing past him, and another one helps Norrie wrap up a love hold.

  3. 'Cat and mouse right now'published at 16:23 BST 5 September 2022

    *Norrie 2-2 Rublev

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Rublev is trying to rush Norrie - he knows he will have to be the one to dictate. He's not giving Norrie the angles to open up the court.

Norrie likes to play like a typical lefty. If you give him more angle to play with, you are digging yourself a bigger hole.

Norrie is trying to get Rublev on the move. It's cat and mouse right now.

  4. Postpublished at 16:23 BST 5 September 2022

    *Norrie 2-2 Rublev

Ooft! Some wonderful defence from Norrie, who is almost off the court at one point trying to lob a ball back in, earns him a point as Rublev fluffs an easy drop shot into the net tape.

It's 40-15, though, and an excellent serve out wide helps Rublev avoid any further drama.

  5. 'Norrie's run at Wimbledon stopped the questions'published at 16:21 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie 2-1 Rublev*

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Norrie's run at Wimbledon stopped the questions of can he go deep in the Grand Slams. I think it just gives him the belief now.

He has said that if he doesn't reach his seeding position - which would be the quarter-finals here - then he would be disappointed.

  6. Postpublished at 16:20 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie 2-1 Rublev*

Better from Norrie, who swings down his first ace to move to 40-15, and an off-balance Rublev jabs a forehand into the net to help the Brit to a hold.

What else is happening in the singles on day eight?

American eighth seed Jessica Pegula's match with two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova begins Monday's action on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 17:00 before Rafael Nadal's quarter-final with American Frances Tiafoe.

After Norrie's match on Louis Armstrong, women's world number one Iga Swiatek, of Poland, takes on unseeded German Jule Niemeier.

Following that, three-time finalist Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, plays Czech 22nd seed Karolina Pliskova before, in the men's event, unseeded Belarusian Ilya Ivashka faces Italian 11th seed Jannik Sinner.

In the night session on Ashe from 00:00, Belarusian sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka faces American 19th seed Danielle Collins before Dan Evans' conqueror Marin Cilic, the 2014 champion, plays Spanish third seed Carlos Alcaraz.

  8. Rublev holdspublished at 16:18 BST 5 September 2022

    *Norrie 1-1 Rublev

A little too big from Norrie on the return, though he's on the board at 30-15 as Rublev double faults.

The Russian holds with relative ease, however, as Norrie glides a backhand into the foot of the net.

  9. 'Rublev's last match was very draining'published at 16:15 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie v Rublev

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Even if Rublev recovered from his five-setter against Shapovalov, but that doesn't help if he is stepping on court against Norrie in this humidity.

Rublev's match was very draining for him and the energy levels will be different out there.

  10. Norrie holds to start matchpublished at 16:14 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie 1-0 Rublev*

Neither player has quite found their range in the early stages, with Rublev twice getting a look at a Norrie second serve and twice flapping it over the tramlines.

A nice forehand winner from Norrie wakes the crowd up and he holds to 30 as Rublev blazes a forehand into the net.

  11. Postpublished at 16:12 BST 5 September 2022

    *Norrie 0-0 Rublev

Cameron Norrie will serve first to get things under way.

And he starts with a double fault, which is not ideal.

  13. 'Spongebob' keeping it rollingpublished at 16:10 BST 5 September 2022

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows

Cameron Norrie superfans among you (Nozzers/Nozz Fam?) might be wondering why their boy called himself SpongeBob SquarePants after his first-round win earlier this week..

    Here's the answer.

"It's the yellow kit I was given. One friend texted me saying 'Well done SpongeBob' so I stole that," says the British number one.

"I think it's tough to look good in the yellow, but I'm doing my best."

Turns Norrie used to be a big fan of everyone's favourite cartoon sea sponge and some pals in Bikini Bottom.

And he used one of SpongeBob's catchphrases to describe want he plans to be doing at the US Open... "Keep it rolling!"

  15. 'Over five sets Norrie is a 'tough out'published at 16:08 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie v Rublev

    Laura Robson
Former British number one at Flushing Meadows

I learned a new phrase out here - 'a tough out.'

Norrie will make you try as hard as possible for multiple hours. He works really hard on the court and in the gym. You are going to get someone who runs you down, and I really feel like over five sets he is one of the ‘toughest outs' possible.

    Norrie v Rublev

Cameron Norrie speaking about Andrey Rublev: "I think I'm going to have to be very proactive and be the one dictating the point as much as I can," Norrie said.

"Obviously there's going to be times, a lot of times, I'm going to have to defend, but I'm going to have to be aggressive."

    Norrie v Rublev

Russian 11th seed Andrey Rublev is bidding to reach a fourth US Open quarter-final.

He came through a gruelling four-hour match against Denis Shapovalov to set up a meeting with Norrie, and was also taken to five sets in his opener against Laslo Dere.

Rublev has had a mixed season but scored a victory over then-world number one Novak Djokovic to win the Serbian Open title earlier this year.

  18. 'It's Norrie getting things right'published at 16:04 BST 5 September 2022

    Norrie v Rublev

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is only the second time Norrie is in the second week of a Slam. It was one of the areas where he undelivered and underperformed.

But once he has ticked a box, he has figured it out. That becomes his new level.

I keep waiting for the catch. I thought last year was a one-off and that we wouldn’t see him at the ATP Finals again.

He went back to the drawing board and hasn’t stopped since.

It is not an accident, it’s not a coincidence. It’s me who is getting it wrong. It’s him getting it right.

    Norrie v Rublev

Cam Norrie has yet to drop a set at this year's Flushing Meadows.

He arrived in New York on the back of his best showing at a Slam, having reached the Wimbledon semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Should he beat world number 11 Andrey Rublev today it would be his biggest win by ranking at a major.

Quieter than usual in Manhattan today, with plenty having left the city as the United States celebrates Labor Day weekend.

That's an annual public holiday to express gratitude to the nation's service workers for their efforts and commitment.

Outside the Queen's Museum - situated next to the Billie Jean King Tennis Center - there is a message to that effect on the building's front.

"Thank you service workers for keeping NYC alive. For... forever!"

While many New Yorkers have headed out to the Long Island beaches, the US Open usually draws some of their biggest crowds of the tournament today.

Somewhere in the region of 65,000 fans are expected at Flushing Meadows today.
