You can hear the football chants of 'Nole' around the stadium and that will be music to Novak Djokovic's ears because this arena has been the most hostile to him over the years.

In particular those finals he played in back-to-back years against Roger Federer when he heard the crowd cheering when he put a first serve into the net.

They hugely overstepped the line then but they seem to be with him at the moment as he steps out to make history against Daniil Medvedev.

Novak Djokovic has looked edgy at times during this tournament with the pressure of history on his shoulders.

Earlier in the tournament he cut off an interviewer when realising he was going to be asked again about the calendar Slam.

After beating Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals he said: "Of course I am aware of it.

"I'm going to treat this match as it's my last one because it's arguably the most important one of my career maybe."

We've already had two bits of history today.

Dutch player Diede de Groot and Australia's Dylan Alcott have both gone one better than it's possible for Novak Djokovic to achieve tonight.

De Groot won the women's wheelchair singles title to complete the Golden Slam - winning the four major titles and winning Olympic gold in the same year.

And Alcott replicated that feat in the men's quad wheelchair singles shortly after.

Steffi Graf is the only other player to have achieved a Golden Slam.

  15. Third time lucky for Medvedev?published at 20:44 BST 12 September 2021

This is Medvedev's third Grand Slam final.

He lost the previous two, to Rafael Nadal in a five-set epic in New York in 2019 and against Djokovic earlier this year at the Australian Open.

"I have the experience of two finals of Slams that can help me - doesn't mean it will, but can help me," Medvedev said.

"The only thing I can say is all what I have left, I'm going to throw it out on Sunday."

It takes two to tango in any final and we should not ignore Djokovic's opponent tonight.

Daniil Medvedev is second in the world rankings and with every month looks more and more a future Grand Slam champion.

His progress to this final over the past two weeks has been more serene than Djokovic's.

He has only dropped one set and has spent five hours less on court.

If anyone was going to stop Djokovic this week it was most likely to be Medvedev.

  17. Djokovic's shot at tennis historypublished at 20:35 BST 12 September 2021

Not since 1969 has a man won all four of tennis' major titles in the same year to seal the calendar Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic is one match away from doing exactly that.

The Australia Open, the French Open and Wimbledon are already secured and now he meets Daniil Medvedev in the final in New York.

Not only would a win tonight secure a feat not achieved for 52 years, it would also be his 21st Grand Slam singles title - one more than the men's record jointly held by Djokovic's great rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

    No pressure then.

Tonight a much more familiar name has a chance to achieve something no less impressive.

This is Novak Djokovic's chance to write his piece of tennis history.
