Brilliant from Fed. Gasquet should be in a good position to put away a backhand at the side of the net, but Federer spots it and sends away a winner, 1-0 Federer.

    *Azarenka 6-5 Cirstea

Victoria Azarenka earns a chance to break at the business end of the opening set and she takes it as Sorana Cirstea goes wide with a wild forehand! The 12th seed will serve for the first set.

  6. Postpublished at 17:54 BST 1 July 2021

Gasquet produces a drop shot and Federer, trying to chase after it, falls forwards. But as falls go this week, and we've seen a lot of them, that looked one of the least painful.

No legs going in opposite directions or ankles giving way. 30-30

  7. Postpublished at 17:52 BST 1 July 2021

Federer might not agree though. He's at 15-30 on the Gasquet serve pushing for what would be a crucial break.

    Federer 5-5 Gasquet*

But Federer responds with a rapid hold of his own. This very much looks like a tie-break.

    *Federer 4-5 Gasquet

Gasquet holds, one more for him to take the opening set.

    Kerber 7-5 5-7 6-4 Sorribes Tormo

Angelique Kerber pumps both fists and screams "come on!" - after three hours and 19 minutes the German fires a winner beyond Sara Sorribes Tormo and clinches a sensational match.

The former champion is into the third round after an extraordinary battle on court two. Just brilliant from both players, but it is the 25th seed who progresses.

    Federer 4-4 Gasquet*

Neither man is giving an inch yet. Each service game is proving to be hard-fought, but neither can do enough to force a chance of a break in the past few. 4-4

  13. Sorribes Tormo breaks backpublished at 17:44 BST 1 July 2021

    Kerber 7-5 5-7 5-4 Sorribes Tormo*

    Unbelievable!

Another twist on court two as Sara Sorribes Tormo breaks back against former champion Angelique Kerber to put this one back on serve in the deciding set. Three hours, 14 minutes and counting...

  14. 'A real struggle'published at 17:42 BST 1 July 2021

    *Federer 3-4 Gasquet

    Andrew Castle
BBC Sport tennis commentator on BBC One

Absolutely not there yet. This, for Roger Federer, is an unfamiliar position. This is a real struggle.

  15. Postpublished at 17:42 BST 1 July 2021

    *Federer 3-4 Gasquet

Federer sends one long and we're inching closer to a first-set tie-break to settle it. Both men will be fancying their chances today.

Federer not at his best, just yet, but still enough to still be on serve.

  16. Postpublished at 17:39 BST 1 July 2021

    *Kerber 7-5 5-7 5-3 Sorribes Tormo

What a match this has been. Those who dropped in on court two more than three hours ago have been treated to an epic tussle. Every rally has been utterly exhausting and on the edge.

Sara Sorribes Tormo holds serve after another gruelling game but Angelique Kerber has the chance to serve for the match.

  17. Postpublished at 17:39 BST 1 July 2021

    Federer 3-3 Gasquet*

Gasquet, ranked 56th in the world, must be very pleased with his performance so far. He's taken Federer to deuce again, but two fine first serves get the required result for the Swiss.

  18. The wrong play?published at 17:35 BST 1 July 2021

    *Federer 2-3 Gasquet

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

Gasquet has the better backhand. I am a bit surprised that Federer is playing there so often.

  19. Postpublished at 17:35 BST 1 July 2021

    *Federer 2-3 Gasquet

There's no wobble from Gasquet, who now leads 3-2 and we're still on serve. Gasquet holds to 30, with Federer sending a low backhand into the net.

Moments earlier, Gasquet had shown great athleticism to spring high and smash away a high one.

  20. Postpublished at 17:31 BST 1 July 2021

    Federer 2-2 Gasquet*

Gasquet produces a perfect one-handed backhand return down the line to win a point, but that's all he can celebrate as Federer blasts a forehand down the middle and Gasquet can only send it into the crowd.
