    Roger Federer v Richard Gasquet

Roger Federer has focused his recovery from two knee operations on being fit for a chance to win a ninth Wimbledon title.

But the sixth seed, who turns 40 in just over a month, has only played a handful of matches in the last year and a half.

Federer was in danger of a first opening-round loss at a grand slam since before he won the first of his 20 titles 18 years ago, but Adrian Mannarino's injury took him through.

The winner of this one has a match (probably again on Centre) against Britain's Cameron Norrie on Saturday to look forward to.

  4. 'No court makes me more nervous'published at 16:57 BST 1 July 2021

    Gauff 6-4 6-3 Vesnina

Coco Gauff on BBC One: "It means a lot to be back here on Centre Court - honestly this court makes me the most nervous of any court in the world but after I win the match it's one of the best feelings.

"Today I was super nervous coming in - there's no other court like Centre Court at Wimbledon.

"Elena is a great player, she's really consistent with her results and today I just tried to stay focused on every point as I knew she was going to fight until the very end and she did. I would say we both served pretty well but I'm just glad I was able to come through.

"I feel like I've changed and grown a lot - the last time I was on this court I don't think too many people knew my name. I feel a little bit at home now. Back in 2019 I was enjoying the experience and now I'm learning but coming into these matches believing I can win."

  5. I got lucky in first round - Federerpublished at 16:54 BST 1 July 2021

    Roger Federer v Richard Gasquet

Next up on Centre, a certain Roger Federer...

He admitted he got lucky after Adrian Mannarino was forced to retire from their first-round match at Wimbledon with a knee injury.

The Frenchman was two sets to one up and a break down in the fourth against Federer when he slipped and fell to the turf clutching his right knee and then pulled out at the start of the fifth set.

Federer said: “He was the better player, so I got a bit lucky. It feels more slippery maybe under the roof. I don’t know if it’s just a gut feeling. You do have to move very, very carefully and if you push too hard in the wrong moments, you do go down.

“It’s drier during the day, the wind takes the moisture out of the grass. It’s super key to get through those first two rounds because the grass is more slippery, more soft. As the tournament progresses, it gets harder and easier to move on."

    Kerber 7-5 5-7 0-1 Sorribes Tormo*

The Spaniard starts with a break, but worrying moment for the former champion Kerber who paused to shake out her wrist in that first game.

She still looks troubled by it now, flexing it back and forth.

A wonderful smile at the end.

She enjoyed herself and she's got to be pleased with the way she played against a veteran grass court player in Vesnina.

Game, set and match - Gauffpublished at 16:49 BST 1 July 2021

    Gauff 6-4 6-3 Vesnina

Elena Vesnina saves the first with a serve that leaps up into the body of Coco Gauff but the Russian double faults on the next! Not the way Vesnina would have wanted her Wimbledon return to end but Gauff, half Vesnina's age, is looking very sharp as she progresses to the third round.

  10. Match points Gauffpublished at 16:47 BST 1 July 2021

    Gauff 6-4 5-3 Vesnina*

Oooh, Elena Vesnina goes for the big forehand but leaks it into the tramlines and now Coco Gauff is two points away from a place in the third round.

The Russian responds with a punchy ace but Gauff is equal to the next one and Vesnina finds the tape. Two match points for the American.

Game, set and match Medvedevpublished at 16:45 BST 1 July 2021

    Medvedev 6-4 6-1 6-2 Alcaraz

A mightily impressive display of skill and experience from Daniil Medvedev, who takes his place in the third round with a straight-set victory over Spain's 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz caused some concern for Medvedev when he broke back for 4-5 in the first set, but from there on the world number two pulled away in style to seal a 6-4 6-1 6-2 win.

There's no doubt Alcaraz has a bright future ahead of him, but on that basis Medvedev will feel confident of going deep into this year's tournament despite never previously reaching the second week.

    Gauff 6-4 5-3 Vesnina*

Elena Vesnina twists on the baseline to try and loosen up that back but she is moving freely on court and pulls clear to 0-30 on the Coco Gauff serve, before an ace from the American - her ninth today.

Oh wow! Vesnina hammers a backhand straight at Gauff, who just jabs her racquet to the floor by her feet and the ball loops up, catching the tape and dribbling on to Vesnina's side of the court.

The teenager apologies and goes on to hold. She's one game away...

That's lovely from Elena Vesnina. A volleyed backhand winer in full flight after some neat baseline combinations and the 34-year-old holds.

    Kerber 7-5 5-6 Sorribes Tormo *

Five drop-shot winners but now two drop-shot errors hands Sorribes Tormo a golden chance to level this match up.

The court coverage from both players has been immense, and the Spaniard has proved she can run all day.

Can the former champion dig deep?

    Gauff 6-4 4-2 Vesnina*

A little pressure on Coco Gauff as she makes back to back double faults for 15-30. Pressure? No chance... the 17-year-old wrongfoots Elena Vesnina with a well-placed backhand and Gauff then takes an important hold with a deep forehand that the Russian drags wide in response.

Some more quick treatment on the lower back for Elena Vesnina during the change of ends.

She moves Coco Gauff around the court but the American reads it well and slaps away a volleyed winner, only to then double fault. 15-15.

  18. Medvedev closing in on third roundpublished at 16:33 BST 1 July 2021

    Medvedev 6-4 6-1 4-0 Alcaraz*

Daniil Medvedev is just two games away from the third round at Wimbledon, which would equal his best ever run at the All England Club.

He's flying now, despite the admirable efforts of future star Carlos Alcaraz on Court One.

    * Kerber 7-5 5-5 Sorribes Tormo

Match point comes... and goes for Kerber in this titanic battle out on court two. It should come as no surprise to anyone watching this match that between the pair of them, they have run 10km on court, and not a little amble in the park either.

This has been a drop-shot-fest with court sprints all over the place.

    Exhausting quality.

Great depth and pace from Elena Vesnina to get Coco Gauff scuttling along the baseline and win the point, before dusting off the hold with a snappy serve.
