    *Muguruza 6-4 2-6 0-1 Kenin

Big hitting from the Spaniard, Garbine Muguruza lays the platform for a couple of quick points with a punchy service game. 30-0.

    *Muguruza 6-4 2-6 0-1 Kenin

Kenin flies out of the blocks to 40-0 but Muguruza gets a chunk of luck with a net ball that drops out of the American's reach. No bother, Kenin dusts herself down to hold.

  3. 'Muguruza will need a painkiller if she loses this match'published at 10:14 GMT 1 February 2020

The doctor gave Muguruza a little painkiller. A mild ibuprofen - she didn't take it though. She'll need that if she loses the match.

    Muguruza 6-4 2-6 0-0 Kenin*

Right then, can Sofia Kenin carry that momentum into the final set?

Will our man in Melbourne Jonathan Jurejko be broken by the Rod Laver Arena DJ?

    The big questions...

While some of the crowd (not me) throw some shapes to the YMCA, Garbine Muguruza does some moving herself. The trainer comes on and the Spaniard goes through a few back stretches.

    Muguruza 6-4 2-6 Kenin

And Kenin gets it! Ruthless from the young American, a brilliant set.

    We're going to a decider...

    Pin-point backhand from Sofia Kenin.

    Set point!

  8. Postpublished at 10:09 GMT 1 February 2020

    *Muguruza 6-4 2-5 Kenin

Garbine Muguruza watches a high ball drop out of the Melbourne sky, takes it on the volley but it's wide! She says not, challenges... and that's just kissed the whites. Game-saver? She claws the next point back too - 30-30.

    *Muguruza 6-4 2-5 Kenin

Shaky from Muguruza. 0-30 and Kenin is two points away from levelling this final

Right, Muguruza serving to stay in the second set. She goes long with a baseline forehand...

Another hold in the bag, Kenin theatrically throws the ball in her pocket hard at the court and stomps back off to her chair. Brilliant rage.

Sofia Kenin is feisty. Is she upset or pumped?

    *Muguruza 6-4 2-5 Kenin

Cool, calm and collected from Sofia Kenin to get over the line, hold and move one game away from taking the second set.

    Muguruza 6-4 2-4 Kenin*

Well... that was all over the shop from Garbine Muguruza, completely miscued, although she makes amends with a punchy winner - almost in frustration at that wild one moments earlier. 40-30.

    Muguruza 6-4 2-4 Kenin*

Lovely stuff from the American, sending Garbine Muguruza the wrong way with a disguised cross-court forehand... it sparks a huge fist pump from Sofia Kenin.

Muguruza wins a battle of the backhands to make it 30-15.

    Muguruza 6-4 2-4 Kenin*

Better that from two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza, fizzing a forehand winner down the line and polishing off the hold with a snappy serve.

    *Muguruza 6-4 1-4 Kenin

Kenin is a bundle of energy on the baseline, bouncing around and taking every ball on... but a couple of loose ones see Muguruza edge to 30-15.

Someone who knows exactly what it is like to lose an Australian Open final is sitting in Kenin's box.

Dinara Safina, the Russian former world number one, would have been able to tell the young American before the match exactly what the hurt of losing a major final feels like.

Not only did she lose the 2009 final in Melbourne, she also lost two French Open finals.

Maybe that has helped add extra fight - if possible - to Kenin.

    Marion Bartoli
Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a much better approach from Kenin. She had to make Muguruza run. You can see why Sofia has beaten so many top-10 players.

    She's tried to find solutions.

    *Muguruza 6-4 1-4 Kenin

That's the way to respond... a slapped forehand winner that leaves the Spaniard no chance.

Kenin consolidates the break with a hold of serve.
